When you carry a sidearm, you have a responsibility for your actions.

That seems to be lost on some here. I just today applied for my lifetime permit. I've had 6 previous concealed carry permits that were good for 4 years each. I'm glad to be able to get a lifetime permit now. Anyway, the application had to be notarized and I dropped by one of my client's businesses who has several notaries working there. I was given a hard time because a few years ago I had an "issue" with a road rage driver in their parking lot in front of about 20 of their employees. Apparently this redneck hillbilly trucker driving an 18 wheeler mistook me for someone else who'd apparently cut him off earlier. The moron followed me onto their parking lot and decided that he was going to whoop up on me a bit. Things didn't go as planned for him and he got both hurt and arrested. (It's nice to have all those eye witnesses!)

My point is not to talk about the foolishness of brawling in a parking lot, but to mention that I had a Glock 27 on me the entire time and I never considered drawing the weapon and bringing in the possibility of deadly force when I didn't perceive imminent danger of being seriously harmed. Now if he came after me with a weapon of some sort I may have had to draw my weapon. As it was, I just ended up being inconvenienced and had to even show up in court with my witnesses when the idiot tried to sue for his medical bills. He lost that as well and even had to pay my attorney fees and had his probation rescinded because of how he acted in court. At no time in court was it ever mentioned that I was armed because I never showed my weapon. I would think most other people who carry also would be reluctant to brandish their weapon unless they felt it absolutely necessary to protect themselves or loved ones. Just because someone is armed doesn't mean they are 'trigger happy' or even likely to show their weapon.

Brent

You just got to teach your employees how to handle a taser:D

Whoa, was that ever a really bad deal, if you're talking about what happened this last year. It's never cool to get intoxicated and taser someone's wife...even when it's by accident!

Great post. Carrying a weapon or even having one gives you a greater responsibility.

Doggone it fellas, if you live in a neighbourhood where you gotta pack to go out maybe you should consider moving! :D

We did move.... unfortunately, one of our new neighbors is/was a raging drunk on pain killers. Since I called the cops on her two years ago mother's day, we haven't had any trouble and they have become kinda civilized.. sorta.

However, we both work in the center of town. There is absolutely no way into town without going through a bad neighborhood. During the day shift, there are few problems. However, after dark, it starts getting scary. And on warm nights, oh my goodness! There are tons of people out. Across the street from my employer there is a Taco Bell that has the drive through open until 3am or later. Across the street from that is a gas station/mini mart that is always open. When the night clubs close, everyone migrates towards the Taco Bell and mini mart. It is not unusual to see the parking lot grid locked with 20 to 30 cars and upwards of a hundred people milling around at 3:00am. The cops will force the mini mart to close, then they all move west a few blocks to the next mini mart and so on out of town. Things settle down by 4:30am.

And, we also own rural property 9 miles out of town. There are three houses across the HWY from it. The left house was a crack house. They tore that down last year. The right house was broken into a few times and the old guy that used to live in the center house was punched out and had his pants torn off of his body when they tried to get his wallet out on his front steps when he returned from the grocery store. They followed him home. It is not safe anywhere, Egon. Honest. Sad state of affairs indeed. :(

Who said that? I was in the apartment???

soundguy

Oops! My mistake. I read it again. Still, coming out of the apartment or driving up and seeing it, kinda that same, to me. Stepping into a situation. Either way, unpleasant business.

Post #348, as I read it anyway.

That was my post. When I came back to the car with my ice cream cone a big guy was standing between our car and his car, blocking me from getting into the car. He said, "You bumped my car with your door." I said I didn't think so, but if I did I was sorry and if there was any damage, I would be glad to pay for it. He replied "I could have killed you just now" and pointed into the car next to ours. Sitting in the front passenger seat was another man, pointing a shotgun at me. That is when I took a few steps backwards and to the left to get behind his car. That meant the guy with the shotgun would have had to track me over his right shoulder, twist around and lean out of the window to keep his gun pointed at me. I wanted to get out of that bead without causing sudden movement. I was surprised how calmly I thought of moving out of the way. I was 16 years old. Once standing behind the car, had I had a weapon, I would have pulled it out and pointed it at the center of the big guy between the cars and tried to convince him to go away. After that, who knows? If he came at me, I would have shot him. If the guy with the shotgun would have tried to get out of the car, I would have shot him, maybe both of them, depending on who advanced towards me or who backed away. I will never know.

But, I did not have a gun. I was able to diffuse the situation with words and the guy decided not to shoot me for bumping his car door, which I maintain I did not. Therefore, I think he just wanted to mess with the little kid in the dark parking lot that night.

Anyhow, I doubt any jury in this town would fault me for moving out of the line of fire and then drawing my weapon in self defense.

In all actuality, had I shot the man, his family probably would have hunted me down and shot me, as that seems to be the tradition around here... you avenge your family, even if they were committing a criminal act!

Awww, what's this society come to? I'm going back to tractor talking. :)

Things have been a little heated in this thread , i hope i hav'nt done anything to make it sound like us Aussies are not your brothers . I can't say any more about gun rights as ive given my word not too , but what i'd like to say is this .

Please remember that I/we will die beside you on the field to defend our homelands and our way of life just as we always have .

That's a pretty nice thing to say! :D Come to America on a guided tour. There is a lot to see. Go to Canada, too, while you are here.

If you go to Scotland, you'll end up trying haggis and getting all queasy anyway. :)

Absolutely.. It's a last ditch defense.

As for gun owners being responsible for their actions.. in reality.. everybody needs to be responsible for their actions.. and yes.. that point is widely lost on many in society.
