I've seen several pictures where people pull in reverse, is there some advantage to do this. Anytime I've pulled with my truck I always pull using hitch.

No, I think the gears are designed to be stronger pulling forward. I guess they were wanting to watch it come out. You also want the weight on the rear tires, especially since the dually would have more traction that way.

If you are pulling going forward, you are powering the ring and pinion gears off the power side of the teeth, if pulling in reverse, you are powering off the coast side of the teeth, therby increasing the chances of damaging the gear set. That being said, typicaly there is a large enough margin of safety engineered into a factory driveline component that breakage from this type of usage in a stock configuration is a very remote occurance.

Thank you for the clarification. I wonder how much of a margin is factored in??

I want to thank the original poster for posting this and the other poster for the kubota video. Those were good training films.

The john deere was parked when it rolled in I wonder if his wife had been using it with the ROPS folded down. Not only were they standing around a tight chain I thought I actually saw at least one person between the two vehicles while they were pulling. I also dont understand why you would pull backwards. I guess they might have tow hooks on the front of the vehicle and thought that was the best way to pull. I know the tow hooks on the front of my silverado are rated at 10,000 pounds. I will probably never find out because I always pull from the reciever hitch if at all possible.

I am not sure what was going on with the kubota I thought hooking the chain to the loader of the one doing the pulling was not the smartest move. I kept waiting for it to stand on its nose. I also cannot figure out why he felt he had to use the front end loader on the one in the water to try and walk it out. why did they not hook the chain to the tractor on the bank draw bar and run the chain under the front end loader of the one in the water and then just pull it out. Seems like in both cases they used the hardest possible means to remove the vehicles from the water.

I think it's because usually reverse is a lower gear.

I love the education I get here. I never considered the gear issue when pulling in reverse. I have always liked pulling things in reverse with my truck using my tow hooks because I have a better line of sight. I will now reconsider my tugging ways. With FWD, I have never found traction to be an issue pulling either direction.
