That was dangerous as heck the way everyone was standing around a tight chain. Also, pulling a heavy load in reverse is the worst way to do it. A ring and pinion is made to take the load in the forward direction. Pulling in reverse is a good way to break your gears.

I am curious about the statement...have you read that somewhere so I can look it up? (ring-pinion part)

This is a good video on youtube. Somehow the guy managed to back his Kubota into a pond. I think maybe he was trying to cut the grass at the edge of the pond with the bushhog. Yes, there is a bush hog attached to the back of that tractor! That's probably what kept it from going in completely. I guarantee you he had to clean his britches out after he got back home!!

If you just look at the profile of ring and pinion gears you can see that one side is stronger than the other.

If you google it you can find quite a bit of info on it.

Also, there are some threads about it on Ford Truck Enthusiasts .com.

I don't know how much difference it makes but if I am pulling someone out and my truck is on dry pavement I will always do it from the receiver hitch. If you are on dirt, I think the tires will slip before you do any real damage.

Yep, all you have to do as look at a ring and pinion set and you can intuitively see that it is made to go in one direction most of the time.

Having said that, I've done a lot of pulling in reverse simply out of necessity. I think it would take an extreme situation or abuse to cause a failure....but pulling a tractor out of a pond might be just that sort of abuse.
