I am with most of you, loaned my tandem axle to my BIL one time. He has ruined the chance of anyone ever hitching to it again.

i already learned my lesson.. I loaded out my car hauler to all friends, but it kept coming back, broken or tore up, and i was always left to fix it..
So i sold it, and bought a new trailer, and just tell me people when they ask to borrow it "NO" in the most polite way possible

Just reading this thread for the first time. We just bought a horse trailer. It was used but, in great shape, all aluminum and I consider it expensive. An "acquaintance" saw it for the first time today and commented "great! I'm moving my horse next month!" I mentioned that Nancy has never towed this trailer, or any other, keeping myself out of the volunteer loop. She replies, "Oh that's no problem, my friend will come get it and drop it off when we're done". At no time did I ever offer or even suggest it was available to be used or loaned. What nerve! I then stated it had only temp plates (expired) and was also un-inspected. That seemed to end it, for now. Anything further will get a flat-out no, it is not available for loan and I'm not able to help.

Tell her that you are having trouble keeping air in the tires and that if she is interested in buying some you might consider it. You might even let some air out of them just for realism.
I might feel differently if she had simply asked if we could help her move her horse, and offered gas or something.
I have a friend with a flat bed trailer. I've needed it twice and both times it came with truck and driver, the way it should be. This same guy needed a backhoe twice, mine was lent out along with me, the operator. We both gain and both are happy.

Okay, I'll admit that's crossing the line. I'm big on "share and share alike", but this acquaintence offering to herself to let her friend come and get your new horse trailer is going a little far.
I would suspect based on what you've told us about this lady's attitude that you would not be the first person to tell her just what she cannot have. I see no reason to lie, misrepresent the truth, or make excuses. Tell her flat out that you're not ready to loan out your new trailer to anyone just yet.

I spoke to an uncle of Mine in MN, he said his neighbor lady came over and asked to use his bumper pull horse trailer to move a horse ... a few days later he called her cell phone and said he needed his trailer back. She replied "I should be back in a couple days" He said he would just go to her house and get it. She said "Its here with me in FLORIDA!!! ... I told you I had to move a horse!!"

I don't loan my trailers or anything else for that matter. In my case, I found that family is worse than freinds. They either return it broken or not at all even after repeated requests to return the items. After having bought small tractors I got a number of calls from relatives asking to borrow those machines. One instance, the person was so excited, saying he's going to save a bundle of $$ by digging out the foundation to thier home expansion with my sub compact. The other wouldn't take no for an answer about me driving my tractor over to remove a line of old hedges and replacing them with new ones just purchase from HD. After I told him all my gear is tied up on another project his wife called me back insisting I come over to do the job a few days later. This time I told her I'll be right over and never showed up. I got yet another call from a different relative asking if he could knock down a 40ft tree if he borrowed my machine!! After a good laugh I told him that his landscaper can help him with the tree removal (we have the same landscaper, and I have him do my big tree work too). Now I tell people the phone # to United Rentals in my area.

As a general rule, I don't loan my trailer/stuff out, either. Most people are interested in their own welfare and think only of themselves. That's just the way it is. I don't go around borrowing other people's stuff and if I need something bad enough, I buy it or rent it. It's good to be independant.
Many people have the gall to ask about using someone else's stuff. I guess it dosen't hurt to ask, and you should not feel guilty about saying "no", too. It's your stuff and it's OK to be selfish...(how's that for a guilt trip)...

I have a shortlist of 3 people (friends and relatives) that I would loan my trailer to. Why? Because they're all trailer owners and have been for years. They all keep their trailers looking like new and I know they'd treat mine like theirs. However, I can't imagine them asking to borrow anything because that's the way they are (like me)
