Hey Guys/broads

Would like to learn more about studding tractor tires! I was following a thread here at another section, started by another poster, it kind of fizzled out. Was some helpful info but still unsure.

I just want to buy screws at my hardware store and put them in myself. Am nervous about buying the wrong type and possibly ruining my tires? Do I need to drill a hole first, what size bit? what size screw etc? Does anybody here have full knowledge of tire studding?

I phone a JD dealer in my area and the guy in parts had never heard of tire studding etc. I did follow a link to a motorcycle shop somewhere in the States where they sell 100 studs for 97 bucks. I am in Canada, but I did read where self tapping screws work very well, I never really get on to pavement.

I have the 2008 3005 JD 4X4 WITH 300 LOADER,REAR BLADE

Here is my driveway and why I need them if anybody has any suggestions:)

I would continue the other thread with a post to it, or start a new one in one of the general sections to get more views. This is not a JD specific question.

I think I would look for chains. Unless you have a spare set of tires it will take you hours to put in studs. I have a good friend that races motorcycles on the ice on the Mississippi river here. He uses multiple studs on each knob of tire. I know you would need less than a racer but it could be hundreds for all 4 tires on your tractor. Ice racers use a stud that has all sides of the screw head sharpened. You would be able to use a regular screw because you would not need all traction availabe. The ice racers NEVER let the screws touch concrete or gravel as it dulls the screws. You would be driving on roads it would not make sense to pay high $ for screws that will get dull. Next spring you would have holes in the rubber where the screws were and I don't have any idea how it would affect tire life.

I think you would be able to use 3/4'" long hex head screws in the bars of the tires, I would start with 2 or 3 per bar and see how it performes. Be careful when the drive is clean as now you have steel wheels!! Please post pictures and tell us what works!! Hope this helps.

We used to put studs in the rear wheels of our three wheelers for use on ice. Used hex head self tapping screws in the bars of the tires. It worked great on ice-didn't make much difference in snow. Once in a while one would throw out when we really reved up, but I don't think tractor tires would have that problem. We didn't pre drill--just run them in.

Sorry if I was unspecific, I used normal hex headed screws not self tapping and ran them in with a drill. We did the same with 3-wheelers. I don't remember any tire problems after removal either, but it was a $20 tire vs several hundred for tractor tires.

OK Thanks guys, so you get a self tapping hex head 3/4 inch screw and you screw it in all the way in the bars? One of you said drill and one of you said no drill.

I have R4 industrial tires on my 3005, so its totally safe to put in a 3/4 inch screw into the bar? I guess it would be quite a few inches before I screwed right through the tire:D

So the bar itself on the tire is just solid rubber obviously?.
you guys are dealing with a tractor rookie

Ya the other section where this had been discussed was in the Kubota section, I actually was lead to it through a google search, yes I took part in the thread, helpfull input but still had no clue. Yes I should have posted in the general thread, but I think I got something to go on now:)

I could have been more specific about the screws we used. They were self tapping like sheet metal workers use--just a fine point on the end, not a drill bit like most self tappers. Also, I think mfreund said he ran the screws in with a drill, meaning a drill motor for power. Correct me if I am wrong, mfreund.

Correct

Correct again..... the bars are a solid chunk of rubber.

My uninformed opinion is to use inexpensive hex head screws(bought in bulk to reduce the cost), if the heads start to wear down...... remove them and replace them as needed.
