Chains Chains on front tires only VS. rear only

/ Chains on front tires only VS. rear only #21
I had to reverse my front wheels in order to provide enough spacing to accomodate the chains.

Be real careful. Front wheels are not designed to be dished out, only dish-in. I've seen lot's of cracked/broken wheels from them being mounted dished out. Puts lots of extra strain out where it doesn't belong. It's fine with no loader, but with a loader that is a lot of stress out there. Keep an eye on the wheels for cracks around the center hole and near the lug bolt holes. That and torque your wheels often to make sure they don't loosen.;)

Thanks for the advice atsgreene:) You are a smart guy that always gives good advice here on TBN.

I will be careful. I don't use my loader much at all in the winter since I bought my rear PTO snowblower last winter. The old rear blade and loader combo just couldn't stack any more snow last winter. I had 12 foot snowbanks by January 30. Now I have no snowbanks now despite at least 5 feet of snow so far this winter.;)

Blowers make loaders almost obsolete.:D:)

I bought some rear tire chains last winter but they wouldn't fit without wheel spacers.

Are you looking to sell them? If they are 14.9 X 24 I may be interested. I'm local.

Here you go:

Aerostich/RiderWearHouse Motorcycle Jackets, Suits, Clothing, & Gear

I ordered some of these just for fun. Maybe they'll let me postpone putting on my rear chains a little longer.

Yeah it seems like something like this would work fine for what I need which is basically somthing to give me traction when the driveway is glare ice so I can get out there & sand it without getting killed.
Which ones did you order??? I'm thinking the off road or the next ones down.

I try to make sure that I still have the hoe on when I install my rear chains in the fall. Once they are around the tire and hooked on the inside its a breeze to tighten them with the rear up on the outriggers.

I bought some cheapy chains at TSC today and a stick welder. I still had bonus money left over. If I bought the good logging chains elsewhere I would have used all my bonus money plus $200. I'm going to weld some cleats on rings and attach those to the cheapy chains then I will have some agressive logging chains and a welder too! I think this may be yankee inginuity. Unfortunatley, this also involves "modifying" my fiberglass fenders to accomodate the chains.

I am so bummed. This week we went from Portland to Kennewick. The interstate was littered with dozens, if not hundreds. of truck chains. I wish I had the guts to stop, would have then had a fun summer project making chains for the PT for free....

I use a duo grip on my rears. They weigh about 90lbs each. I've found it easiest to jack the rear end up with a floor jack so both wheels are off the ground at the same time. Then just hook a chain to a tire lug and spin the tire. The chain comes right up nice and easy. Attach the connectors, spin the tire tighten the connectors one more time, then put on the bungis and you're done. The wheel is so big and you have so much leverage as a result it's very easy.

Yes it will ride rough!
Kinda hopity-hopity--

Why not look at studs? many snow contractors around here use them.
Bigger studs are available for tractor tires tha you see on cars plus you can keep them on all year long.
I know of one contractor that has over 1300 hrs on his and ALL his time is on asphalt surfaces as well most of his drives are very hilly and short= much stop and go.
Also he does about 3 miles on a paved highway to service his clients.
can you tell me of a supplier that carries studs for tractor tires for a tc45d

Sorry for the late reply Bill.

I went with the "Low Profile C". I'm just putting 50 in each tire to see how they do over the next year. If they hold up then I may put more in next winter.

I still think the chains are more useful in the bad stuff. I have studs on my SUV but when it's bad I drive my F350 with V-Bar chains.

You already have the rear chains. How much would spacers for the rears cost versus front chains?

I have a 2oo6 Kub L28oo. It seems to have lotsO traction plowing in the snow, even when it is deep. However using an angel plow when making the first plow after a heavy storm keep a line is tough. Also when re plowing the piled up snow on the berm in order to give the next new snow someplace to be moved to also is a tad difficult to keep a line on. I now lift the plow half way up the depth of the berm n just plow it twice, so more time n fuel/ware an tare.

So I also am considering adding chains to only the front, more so for steering vs additional traction. I keep my hoe on the back all winter/the time so the rear set of wheels seems to get plenty of traction due to all the weight. However, with only a 28hp motor that probably does not weigh that much, thus not keeping the front wheels from spinning in the snow n ice I suppose compared to the rear.

I also have AG tires on all 4 corners that still have lots of lug remining.

I like the one person's suggestion to put studs in the front tires. I may check into buying a set of both wheels n stud tires. Than just change them out in the fall n spring when the loader bucket mounted is remounted in order to lift the tires off the ground for easy change over (I remove the loader bucket for snow plow lifting and replace the bucket with a 4 foot + - wide by 6" square piece of box steel mounted on both the end of the loader arms and hydro ram ends thinking this will help keep the ends from twisting and being bent back if only one arm should take big hit sometime, see below foto).

6 year old thread in case you were hoping for a response. I run 2 link v-bars on an L3400 and have had really good luck with them.

I wouldn't stud tires unless I had a spare set of tires and rims to swap out after winter - I'd go chains - way cheaper. I run 2-link v-bar ladder chains on my L4200 front wheels only to push my snowblower around. I'm not worried about stressing the front end since load requirements are fairly light - much less that those plowing a field anyway, and my tractor is designed for that. You move slowly in the snow, and the fronts are just assisting whatever traction the rear (turfs) can muster. My chains were about $110 for the pair from tirechains.com.

I have been running chains on the front tires of my B7800 for many winters now. In order to accommodate the chains I have to reverse the rims of the front wheels. Last spring I found that several of the right side wheel's bolts had unscrewed from their wheel-some partially and 2 completely had fallen out. I bought new bolts and now check all my wheels regularly. I have no doubt it had something to do with the chains and reversing the wheels

After all the years think I would chaco out how old a topic was, thnnks for cluing me in......

The blower on your Kub looks like it does a great job. My Kub probably could only travel with the plow up 100% in that deep of snow (if that). How deep was that and U live in western PA n get that much snow? Lake effect area I suppose? I live in the NE corner, 9o miles west of NYCity in the Poconos.

Sorry I do not know what link v-bars are. Have a foto by chance?
