Just wondering how a naturally aspirated diesel engine gets it's supply of combustion air

Maybe you can tell us why most diesel engines need a vacuum pump to operate all the vacuum devises in autos and trucks.

JJ, you already explained that very well in your previous post. And the original poster's question was answered very well in the first two responses.

Almost everything since then has just been bickering over terminology. That was my point, you say ta-ma-to, I say to-ma-ta.

The piston does not suck the air into the cylinder. Atmospheric pressure nominally 14.7 lbs forces air into the cylinder.

There is absolute pressure (the pressure that air puts on the circumference of a vacuumed body) and there is relative pressure ) Pressure above the atmosphere around us.

In 99% of the cases, weエre talking relative pressure, which basically is the DIFFERENCE between atmospheric (the air around us) pressure, and the pressure in the closed body like a tire or air tank, which we are comparing with atmospheric pressure.

generally the atmospheric pressure is 1 bar, or 1 kg per square centimeter. this changes 15% up and down depending on the weather at sea level. At high altitude this pressure is even lower because the layer of air on top of it, has less weight pushing down on it to cause this atmospheric pressure.

So, atmospheric pressure changes quite a bit by weather and altitude. But we calculate with the rule of thumb that atmospheric pressure is 1 bar.
