Mike Vick's dogs, where are they now?

I don't personally know of anyone's pet lion that has ever mauled anyone either, but I absolutely guarantee that if I ever see the first hair of the pet lion a local near here owns I will shoot to kill on sight. Period. Why? Because it has the very real potential to kill me or a family member. For the same reason a stray cat or yorkie will likely be ignored the first time or two it comes around, but a stray anything that looks like the American Pit Bull Terrier, or any dog that acts even remotely aggressive, will also be shot on sight. My land, my rules.

You've brought this particular dog issue up repeatedly. If you want to love on a particular breed, have at it....that's your prerogative. It seems it's about time you understand that many of the rest of us accept that Pit Bull Terriers and associated breeds are unusually dangerous..whether you agree, or disagree with the reasons, and all you are doing is baiting anymore. I don't often read about dogfighting groups being caught who are using springer spaniels....or border collies...or labs. In fact, I've never read about such. Hmmm.......

Last winter I saw another on the next road over, and warned my family and neighbors (who join me in my kill anything that looks like them philosophy). I saw it when it attacked my van. Turns out it got a bicyclist about two nights later, then ran to the woods when the owner "supposedly" tried to call it in when the warden & sheriff showed up. I saw it a couple weeks later, was unarmed, but called the warden. Warden showed up with the sheriff and before they got here it had tried to attack another vehicle, losing a contact encounter this time and getting to the edge of the woods near the road. Warden and sheriff saw it, and both state it attacked them as they got within 50' or so. Both shot it dead. Both affirmed their consistently bad experiences with any dog even remotely pit bull.

So, love yours all you like. Just don't let them get on my place.

Center for Disease Control DBRF=dog bite related fatalities

"Studies indicate that pit bull-type dogs were involved in approximately a third of human DBRF reported during the 12-year period from 1981 through 1992..."

The entire report is a 5 page read. Bear in mind it deals only with bites/attacks resulting in a human death.

No Chihuahuas listed, Akitas were about 13th on the list by number of fatalities caused.

I know plenty of people that had pitbulls, rottweilers, dobermans, etc and never had so much as a growl out of them. I know people that had dachsunds (sp?) and they were mean, viscious little runts that needed to be shot, right after the owner of course. My friend had pit bulls and if you brought them a steak, they would help you carry the valuables out of the house. I don't think they knew how to growl.

I also feel that there are no bad kids, just bad parents.

Just my humble opinion. If I had bad experiences with pit bulls, my opinion may change.

Sigarms, We are from the same area and I don't much like to disagree with anyone but on this subject we will have to agree to disagree.
All the " bully" dogs can be gentle pets. Also a stick of dynamite can be a fine throw toy. A stick of dymamite won't hurt anything if left alone but just let someone light it and it doesn't know who is in range, it just blows. That is what it is supposed to do.
A "bully" dog works the same sort of way. It can be a very gentle pet that is loved by it's owners and they have seen it play with small children many times, but when it gets ignited it just blows, it doesn't know who or what is in range. That is what it's supposed to do.
I know you love your dogs and I don't blame you. But please don't blame anyone else who has a problem with them. Later, Nat

Just my humble opinion.

I really enjoyed your replies and how well thought out they were. It seems that some of the views people have on pits boarders on the religious/political, in such that they have made up their minds and nothing anybody says will change their minds. They want to state their reason, tell you why you are wrong and ignore everything that you say in return.

I had forgotten about the attacks of the small "toy" breeds in my earlier post, but now remember talking to vets in both California and here in Texas about them and how vicious they can be. I had Boston terriers, and one of them was deaf. She would snap and attack somebody if they surprised her. After that, it was pretty revealing to do a little research and find out how often it happens.

My brother is a field trial judge for several associations, he's won them and he's made a fair amount of money training dogs. He works on pointers, retrievers, guard dogs and with the police departments. Most of the aggressive type work is done with German Shepard's, Rotweilers and Belgium dogs. All very smart and very aggressive!!!! I'm actually too scared to wear the sleeve and catch them, but enjoy watching it. Of the three, the Belgium is the scariest. It's unbelievably fast, powerful and just downright scary. Rots are so lazy that I've sort of lost interest in them. German Shepard's are also very, very smart and extremely versatile.

I've seen them turn on from totally bored, to killing machines. It's instant, and it's terrifying. It's also been a well trained dog responding to a command, and while I don't wear the sleeve and let them attack me, I will play the fool and help out in some training of them. At least I used to when I lived in California. I'm not sure if I want to do even that again.

These are some of the best and most expensive dogs that there are. One Rot that came over from Germany cost $20,000 that he was working with. That dog was just plain crazy and too powerful to control. When he was put in a yard to guard it, nothing was ever taken. He worked place in Oakland where it was really bad, and as long as he was there, nothing happened. Of course, he had a coyote with him as an allert dog. If anybody knows about Rots, you'll know that they will sleep through more things then other dogs. They like to ignore what's going on around them when they are tired and have a bad reputation of letting people in when they should be stopping them. That coyote would wake him up and get him going. When it happened, bad guys got hurt.

Many people forget that the most vicious breed that does the most killing is the **** sapiens. Certainly there are a few good ones in the breed but many will turn on you in a split second especially after consuming adult beverages. Proper training will result in most doing exactly what they were trained for but unfortunately, many millions each year are trained by their leaders to kill and maim. Though this is the most talented breed on earth, much of their talent is wasted on devising better and more efficient ways of killing others. The young are so cute and precious that it is almost unbelievable that they could grow to become so aggressive. They are feared by all and have no natural enemies of other breeds to control their population so they are quickly overtaking the earth and spreading to the far corners. Those living in the most densely populated areas appear to be the most aggressive and should be avoided at all costs.

For more information on this subject please refer to the Bible.

Eddie,

I always enjoy reading your responses as you seem to always have a good amount of thought and common sense in your writings. I have my own personal beliefs but they are subject to change based on real world experience. Maybe I haven't had a bad experience yet so that's why I feel the way I do. I tend to believe that everything and everyone is good until I'm proven wrong. I guess I haven't had a bad experience yet.

p.s., it's the last day of 2008. How did you do on your list of goals?

You've brought this particular dog issue up repeatedly

First thread that I know of that I started on this "topic".

Apologies, I found the article from Sports Illustrated moving, and I can assure you, I had no hand in the article.

Other than that, perhaps I've responded to "stereotyping" the Terrier breed, didn't realize that you had to conform to someone elses opinion.

but I absolutely guarantee that if I ever see the first hair of the pet lion a local near here owns I will shoot to kill on sight

They actually allow citizens to own wild game animals from Africa in your state?

My land, my rules

And you have every right to feel that way when it comes to an animal.

I don't often read about dogfighting groups being caught who are using springer spaniels....or border collies...or labs

And I often don't read about dogs setting up the fight and training themselves.

Just don't let them get on my place

I think you'll let me slide if I don't make the long drive:D

Many people forget that the most vicious breed that does the most killing is the **** sapiens

Agreed. However, I did find it interesting that some in the chimp family has been observed killing it's own kind for no apparent reason. Some animals will eat the young of it's own species, but usually due to mating and reproduction.

I had forgotten about the attacks of the small "toy" breeds in my earlier post, but now remember talking to vets in both California and here in Texas about them and how vicious they can be.

Thus the saying "small dog sydrome" pertaining to a man small in size always seeming to be looking for a fight or having a "small fuse". Believe Eddie, small dogs are usually the most agressive. However, like you had mentioned, since the damage they can do is minimal due to their size, people let their aggressive behavior "slide".

Sigarms, We are from the same area and I don't much like to disagree with anyone but on this subject we will have to agree to disagree.

No problem disagreeing with me:D Living in a rural southern community, I'm past the point of arguing with people on certain issues. Heck, most of the county thinks that if you practice the Islamic faith, you must be a terrorist. Not trying to get polictical, just an example of the fact of life with people who like to sterotype.

For more information on this subject please refer to the Bible.

What I find interesting is that no one group of people were probably more sterotyped and hated than the Samaritans. Funny how Jesus used them as an example.

Yes, I know some peoples minds will never change. Fact of life. As mentioned, I actually found the article interesting, and thought some others would as well.

Yes, I know some peoples minds will never change.

Unfortunately, you're right. However, if you happen to be the one who has to pick up the remains after the dogs kill a person, especially if it's one of your family members, then just maybe you will change your mind. Of course, a few years ago, in Dallas, we had a woman who's Rottweiler killed her baby and she said she could always have another baby, but didn't want the dog destroyed, so I won't be surprised if you're the same way. That comment did not endear her to the jury.
