Brandi, what are the chances of hitting water before you get to the full depth you want?
The reason I ask is because I read that your overflow drain isn't going to be full depth. As I cautioned before once you can't keep the work area dry.................your done, unless you have access to an excavator.

Sincerely, Dirt

Dirt,
I have a little clear water that has seeped in at 10 feet. I am going to try to take off work Monday night to finish digging to depth. I have about a 16 x 16 area at 10 feet dug. I am just digging to 9 feet now. Then I will dig 8 feet, then 7. My backhoe is turned sideways to do this, so it is hard to slope it smooth. I can dig a ditch about 100 feet to a gully if I really need to do so. Then I can put some 2 x 12s over the ditch in the driveway to drive over if I have to. Forecast is dry all this week.

Brandi,

Can you run a culvert across the top of your driveway and then use the dirt from your pond to build up the driveway so it's a gradual climb up and over it?

What do you have for a surface on your driveway now? If its gravel, then it should be simple to scrape it off and re-use it again when you need it.

The difference in how much water that flows through an 18 inch culvert compared to a 15 inch is significant. It's a huge amount of water that the 18 inch can handle. How much water do you get there on a really bad rain? What about a when it rains for days and days? I know that one inch of rain when the ground is dry is one thing, but a one inch rain when the ground is wet and saturated is a totally different thing. Plan for the worse conditions that you can imagine, and hope you never see it happen.

Eddie

Eddie,
In the photo I am removing the short concrete that is joined to a 12 inch black plastic culvert. This spot , as you can see, could be enlarged to 18 inch culvert. The driveway is clay with concrete wash out over it. Tilt the culvert up a little and it should be at the right elevation.
We get a lot of rain water coming down the road and ditches. Don't really want all of that going into the pond. It goes through a culvert right next to the dam. I have some wet weather springs near my work shop and barn. But I don't think I have any near the pond. We will see. I can see how it can be a fun game trying to either keep water out or searching for more when it rains and how to divert it into your lake.
hugs, Brandi

Brandi,

Looks like you have a nice project started. I would love to have a pond but I don't need to add anything to the projects list:eek:.

Keep posting pics of your progress. I am sure it will turn out great!

Flatheadyoungin,
Your welcome. One thing I learned and want to pass on is if you dig a pond with a loader and backhoe.....made sure you make it wide enough to turn around in. I have to leave the pond to swap ends. If I had it wider, I could have just used the loader bucket to dig the pond.

Brandi,
Thanks for pointing me to this thread and sorry to miss you at the Ag show this year.
Although I know nothing about pond building, I'm inspired to see you digging it with your Mahindra.
I'm contemplating doing the same with my Kama and Loretta's Jinma sometime in the near future. Our tractors are a little smaller than yours, but I've done lots of earth moving with the Kama already. One of my concerns is our land is full of granite and boulders, which might make it impossible to do the whole thing ourselves. Looks like your soil is much more manageable than ours is. We'll give it a try anyway...at least do as much ourselves as we can.
Nevertheless, it's great to see you do it all yourself like that.

Between your thread and Eddie's and the others here, I'm sure there is enough information that your pond will be a success. I hope to learn even more from all the information when I dig mine. lol ... It sure is different from just "digging a hole" like I though a couple years ago. Good luck and keep the posts coming. I'll be checking in to view the progress on a regular basis.

Rob,
Glad to inspire. I only had clay to dig in. I am sure you will need help with the rocks. Here are the latest two photos of the pond. I am going to call it Lake Marie in honor of my mother. Her middle name was Marie. The stump will get a root trimming and may even be removed for some broken culverts. The other photo is from my deck. It shows the driveway curving around the pond. The clay island is about 4 feet high in about 8 of water once full.

IH3444,
Glad you like it.:) It is solid clay.;) I hit good clay about two foot down, with about 6 inches of topsoil. So I have about 18 inches of "damp" sticky unpackable clay. I won't need a pond liner.

First of all, sorry to hear about the lost of your Mother.

From the looks of the pictures, your doing a great job and you have
the right soil to work with, (If you can keep it dry)

When i bought my property in 2000 it didn't have a septic system on
it. I didn't have a backhoe so i had to hire someone to install it.
when they came out to look at it they did a soil test. Then the guy said i have some bad news for ya, he said about 1 1/2 to 2 FT deep there is solid clay and it holds alot of water, i told him thats ok and i'm kind of glad, he couldn't understand why i was so glad until i said the word (POND) then he got it and laughed.
They had to install alarge concrete tank with 4 small chamber tanks
coming from the large tank.

So i bought a new tractor with a backhoe attachment to do some work on our property, dug footers, cut trees, planned a place for a garden, we have a river behind our house and i hauled rich black top
soil from the river bank to our garden. Once all of the important things were done, then it was planning the pond.

I started the pond in april 2002, i started digging and once i got down about 5 FT. i hit water, I dug most of it with the backhoe, then i
had to fix a slope to get down in THAT MESS, i used my fel some but i
did better with the backhoe because the clay was so packed so hard.

I hit water at different depths, (5ft. 7ft. 10ft.) once i got down 10ft i decided that was deep enough. during digging i had to use a pump the wet clay stuck to my buckets, my tires had about 1ft. packed on them, it was a mess. when i decided that 10ft. was enough then i sloped the sides using my backhoe, after i got the right slope i took my backhoe bucket and curled it and packed it down.

Then where i drove down in i put large rocks on the bottom to hold the back fill of rocks, and clay dirt, packing it down with my bucket.
that is my dam, it was so steep i had to be pulled back out:D

I put a six inch pipe close to the top on mine, I haven't had any problems of over flowing with a six inch pipe. back on top i filled in on
three sides with clay dirt packed it and sloped it. My front yard has just a little slope, When we get a really hard rain the water finds its way to the pond. (That's why i didn't fill the back side facing the house)

I don't have a liner in mine, it is solid clay once you get past the 2ft.
mark and the clay holds water very well. Unless it gets very hot for several days without rain then it starts to drop a little.

In 2004 i came up with an ideal to get more water in the pond from
the rains, I have gutters on my house and garage, so i dug a ditch 250 feet from my house to the pond, and put in 4 inch pipe from the house to pond and works out real well.
Then there is a small creek over the bank beside my house, that runs through a bottom and into the river. I bought a well pump from
harbor freight and ran 150 feet of 3/4 inch pipe from the creek up the bank and tapped it to the 4 inch pipe when we don't get any rain.

I saw where water plants was mentioned, i haven't had any problems
with weeds or any kind of grass growing in mine at (10ft) deep i guess because of the clay bottom, but i did plant a water lily pad plant the fish love it, but in the summer when it comes back out it is
getting wider every year.(i may have to take it out if i can) We caught
bluegill, crappie and bass from the river after the pond was done and they nest every year. But the bass have ate some of our other fish.

It took my pond a couple of years to really settle, but the rain water
from the gutter and pumping from the creek has really helped it, the water going into it helps clear the water up and keeps film off the top.

My pond is just about thirty by forty and is ten feet deep, Now i wished that i would have made it bigger but with all the water and fish i guess I'll just leave it alone for now. (and the wet clay dirt too)

I hope this has helped you with the clay dirt issue.

I think you are doing a great job, just hang in there.

Thanks.:) Mom loved pier fishing so she could sit in her lawn chair.;)
Johndeere4300,
Thanks for the update on your pond.;) Did you put in a drain valve or spillway besides the 6 inch (overflow?) pipe? As to wishing your built it bigger..............any good farmer building something...............it is never big enough and is always adding on as in a shed on a shed added to a barn or building. I can always dig Lake Marie II. This first pond really is just a big trial and error learning curve.

I just put a pipe in, its really a 10 inch pipe(sorry) at the end where
the water comes out, i dug out in front of it just enough for the water
to drain. There is a ditch in the bottom and the water comes out of the pipe, goes to the ditch that was there before i started the pond and ends up back in the small creek over the bank from my house.

I put chicken wire on the pipe to keep the fish from going out, i put
my garden down where the pond is so i can water if needed.

Do you have a creek close by?

When it rains there's alot of water that comes off my house, that's why i ran the 250 feet of pipe from the gutters to the pond.

(P.S.) I know all about the garages, sheds, barns. never enough:D

I removed the stump from the pond today. I kept thinking it was a little to high in the pond and too many fishing lines would be lost to it.;) I will put some broken culverts in it's place.
I also cut back and sloped the shallow end this evening after dark and gave it a rounder, less square look. My loader lights work great,:) but I need to wire a seperate circuit for the backhoe lights to get more brightness for better depth perception. :(
The water level keeps creeping up and we haven't had any rain all month.:D Which pleases me immensely.

Hi Brandi,

With the water rising, what are your plans for a pier or deck? I'm not sure you far out you can or even need to go, but having a deck of some kind is just about mandatory. It creates a sitting area, a gathering point and a point of focus for your pond. It gets you off of the grass and what may be living there and a level place for your chairs.

With the size of your pond, I'd think of a wooden deck that goes out over the edge of the water about a foot. I don't think there is any point in going farther, but it should go out over the water just a bit.

I gues if you went that rout, you could easily cantelever it out and not put anything into the water. Just anchor some beams to the ground and build a nice little deck.

It's looking great. I admire your determination to be out there digging after dark. I'm hiding indoors because it's 40 degrees out this weekend!!
