2015 HST purchase question (problem)

Hi,

Well I'm almost ready to pull the trigger on a 2015 HST w/ FEL and BH but I ran into a snag (at least for me). My deal is a good deal, not a steal, but pretty good.. so take that into consideration too.

I have a local dealer that has two on the lot that he wants to move. I'm settled on the make and model but when I questioned him on the model year of the units it turns out that they were built in 9/2007. That has them sitting on his lot (or some lot in Texas) for almost 1-1/2 years, minus transport time.

I know the warranty starts the day of purchase but a tractor with 4 hours on it sitting in the Texas / Arizona sun with no use for that long really bothers me.

The BH (2017) has been sitting there longer than that because it is totally faded from red to almost pink.

I know most construction equipment sits outside forever but I also know it causes problems with seals, gaskets, hoses, tires, batteries, etc., especially in the Arizona sun even though I am in the high country, not the valley.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this. What would you do if you ran into this situation. I'm approved and was ready to sign the papers until I asked to make sure they were at least 2008 models. No matter what I will loose 1-1/2 years down the road if I ever go to sell it or trade it so even though the warranty is good from day one I'm getting a 1-1/2 year old tractor for the jump.

Any thoughts would be appreciated?? Thanks for your input.

Outdoor storage has ruined or damaged a lot of equipment, from what I
have seen. Sometimes the damage is greater for new equipment because
the pivot pins on loaders and hoes are not adequately greased when first
installed. Water gets into the ungreased joints and makes rust.

UV is bad, too, as you know from living in AZ. When I lived in AZ many yrs
ago, my m/c trip meter digits actually melted from sitting out all day when
I was at work.

Anyway, some discount is called for in your case, but you may want to
remove and clean all FEL and hoe pins after your purchase. Exposed hyd
lines may be somewhat compromised, too.

Your price should reflect that its been sitting somewhere since 9/2007. With only 4 hrs. its technically a new old stock. Ask if the warranty will cover the hoses, battery, tires etc. that may have deteriorated from the Arizona sun. If so, get it in writing and go for it. Paint is going to fade if left outside and should also be reflected in the price or have him repaint it if he's not willing to negotiate. You didn't state a price so don't know how good a deal you've been offered.

One thing I forgot to mention, which goes to my concerns, is yesterday the dealer started the unit up to raise the bucket so I could measure the height and when I looked underneath the tractor it was leaking oil pretty good. It was only running for a few minutes yet there was a pretty good pool of oil in the sand. I didn't crawl under to investigate but that is when I asked how long the tractor had been sitting there.

With tractor, FEL and BH the MSRP is $21,485.00. My price is $18,500.00, not including $400.00 customer rebate (which really shouldn't count in the sales price because I get that no matter what I pay for the unit).

The only added extra is the tires are already loaded (water only) so I'm not counting that. I can have my choice of a 10, 12 or 16 inch bucket.

That's 14% off MSRP for a 18 month old tractor and faded out (and I mean really faded out) BH.

I looked at the same model tractor, FEL and BH in late May of last year (well before the bottom fell out of the economy) and the price was exactly the same as now. So add almost 9 months to the unit sitting, as well not another soul at the dealership in all the times I've been in there in the last 3 weeks (they said they went from 20 employees down to 5), plus 80% or more of the builders and landscapers in our area out of business and it just doesn't add up for an 18 month old tractor.

I have been approved for financing and ready to buy.

I'd ask for a better deal since its a 9/2007 but I don't like to pay MSRP. The key is Suggested Retail Price. Usually you can get a better package deal when buying tractors with attachments not retail on each attachment. Just my opinion. I don't have the BH for my 2615HST but did get a better price buying it with the loader and a snowblower as a PACKAGE DEAL. I'm still looking for a BH for mine. I may go aftermarket and adapt it to a Mahindra sub frame.
$18500 is only about 12% off retail (which doesn't include the $400 rebate). you get that on any one you buy.

Hmmm...Faded paint, leaking oil, Maybe fate is telling you to walk away from this one. You need to be comfortable with this and it sounds like you are not. Listen to the voice in your head and get something you are not going to worry about. I think you need a shiny new red tractor that is not leaking oil before you get it home. Might be a few extra $ but peace of mind is worth it.

Chris, I sent you a PM with a little info on the tractor age and how Mahindra can sometimes help the dealer a little with moving an aged unit. Sounds like things are tough for your local dealer right now.

From what I've gathered the 2015 although still available has been discontinued and so has the 2710 backhoe. So even if I can get a 2015 or 2216 I probably won't be able to find a 2710 which I need for the digging depth.

So I guess I will have to start looking at the Kubota with a BH75A backhoe.

Often it is very hard to compare prices since there are so many factors involved. No question your dealer is in a tough spot right now too. I would recommend you to buy it, IF the tractor was in good mechanical and cosmetic condition. It would be nice to help out your local economy right now and get some money flowing, however something doesn't sound quite right. Trust your gut. I had a hydraulic leak on my tractor after only 2 hours of use. It initially worried me but it was easily rectified with 2 minutes and two wrenches. A lot of things loosened up and needed to be tightened, that is normal.
My last note is that about 10 months ago I bought a 2415 TLB Hydro for $18,500 (plus tax). Talk with your dealer and closely examine the machine. Trust your gut. Goodluck.

I think you are making a very wise move here Chris. There is nothing worse than cutting a deal on a tractor only to find out that the machine is 1-2 years older than you thought it was. You will never be entirely happy with it. Such faded and aging machines should just be removed from dealer lots and auctioned off after a while and fresh, new stock brought in for the dealer to sell. I wouldn't take a tractor sold as new that's over 12 months old no matter what and I would aim for one that's as pristine new as possible.

One has to wonder why Mahindra dealers in particular don't opt for indoor or at least shaded storage of these brand new machines. Red is a color that can fade very fast if left in direct sunlight and faded pink is not a very pretty color for a brand new $20K tractor. I have never figured that out.
