Texas 119 gallon max gasoline carry without permit

i am curious why Aluminum will cause less sparks? Is it not a conductive metal that even works better at conducting Electricity then steel? In explosive atmospheres at work we use brass, but that is for a metal to metal strike type spark, i.e. when i drop or slip with a wrench and hit something there is no spark.

Just curious. Good luck

I think the aluminum will function like copper, brass.. etc.. and not spark when struck like steel will.. at least that's my take on what he was saying.. etc.

Yes by all means...like LB59 said...and like he reminded us all again that he said it first...
Well it just don't make no sense to me to fiddle with hauling 119 gallon when most suppliers will deliver 100 to 150 gallon.
The original posters logic for hauling it himself just don't make no sense judging from the current information.

That is one heck of a document- 1*if it is correct then all of us carrying gas in a 5 gallon plastic jug are violating the law:eek:

2*And what about the pic below? I have two a 10 gallon and a 15 gallon.
1&2*Why would either be violating the law?

Did you read the document?

"Gasoline must be transported in a
red metal UL listed safety can."

A 5 gallon plastic can is NOT a metal safety can.

"Gasoline carried in quantities per
container greater than 8 gallons per container must
comply with the following:
1. The package/container must be marked on one side
as follows:
Gasoline
UN1203
2. The package/container must be
labeled with a class 3,
flammable liquid label.
3. Shipping Papers must be carried
along with an MSDS sheet for gasoline."

The 10 and 15 gallon containers I showed are more than 8 gallons, and aren't marked with the aforementioned requirements.

Personally I think the document is NOT correct.

Federal DOT law states 1000 lb of flamables may be transported before placards are required. Then the fun comes in to effect. DOT numbers on your vechile are required, for liquids a tank inspection is required, your insurance goes up and all the good stuff with the fed. regulations not to say anything about the HAZ-MAT endorsement on your licence. Finger prints and a background check add up to something like 150 dollars.
If you stopped and your over 1000 lbs, un-placarded and un-endorced licence there is a good possibility you are going live in a place with a new address, and a new style and color of clothes than your use to. Its a serious offence not anything to say of dangerous!

From a quick search that's about 153 gallons of gas. I think to OP was thinking of around 100 gallons.

If you rely on aviation practices you would run a grounding wire from tank to the pump.

That is generally a simple braided wire (aircraft cable) terminated in an alligator clip that you clamp onto metal.
Simlpy carry a 12 ft length of wire with clips at both ends!

That's exactly what I thought about. I would make sure the receiving tank is grounded and then jumper the transport tank to the receiving tank before starting any fuel transfer. A vehicle with rubber tires can easily hold a static charge, especially on very low humidity cool days. I think a set of jumper cables would work as a good jumper in most cases. Having the contact point on the transfer tanks as far away from the spigot as possible is also good. There might be a tiny spark you will never see or feel.

I, JDGREEN4ME and probably others, understood this the first time you mentioned it.

This is why I love TBN.... interesting info and comments. Here's what I've learned:

- between 8 and 119 gallons of gasoline you can't go wrong with a class 3 flammable sign, container marked as gasoline, a MSDS for gasoline and shipping papers although JPM1 indicates that DOT doesn't require signs until 1000 lbs is reached.
- jumper cables clipped between transport tank and receiving tank would be a really good idea

Comments:
- Yes, I am thinking of around 100 gallons of gasoline
- my experience is that aluminum, when struck, sparks less than steel, which some transfer tanks are made of. Agreed, Al and Fe both conduct electricity.
- why not have it delivered? I guess I just like the flexibility and independence a transfer tank offers. When an emergency arises whether ice storm, tornado, gas shortages/outages then normal supply/distribution/availability/schedules are destroyed yet the home/life/survival needs of myself, wife, father (95), son (disability), another son/wife/grandson (1 yr old with medical problems). Meeting their needs requires I be able to keep various vehicles and generators running, perhaps for days.
- I do in fact have a tank on a stand
