Last time I took a ratchet into sears . All they did was give me the replacment guts . Not the entire ratchet

I don't care if they re-gut a ratchet or replace it, as long as it works when I leave the store. I have broken several screwdrivers from "mis-use" and sockets from a impact gun, never a issue getting replacements.
I am a professional auto tech, my tools are Matco, Mac, Snap-on, S&K and craftsman. I use craftsman exclusively for my 3/8 gun and 1/4 air ratchet. All the suppliers warranty against breakage, non for loss. I loose more than I break so I use the cheapest.
Many years ago, Sears had a policy against professionals using tools and misuse, but sometime in the 80's-90's the policy was changed to "no questions asked"

Did you know that K-Mart owns Sears!

I believe it's the other way around. See Sears Holdings Corporation - About Kmart. It says "Kmart, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sears Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: SHLD), is a mass merchandising company that offers customers quality products through a portfolio of exclusive brands and labels."

Nice thread.

Regarding ratchet innards, I take the clip out with a pair of needle-nose pliers and put some grease on the ratchet pawl. Not a whole lot. Learned that 45 years ago. Ratchet is smoother and feels better to use.

Regarding Craftsman tools, I sent my wife back with a 40 year old set of lineman pliers that I had abused for 39 years. I told her to buy--and not even ask for a free pair--- but they gave her one anyway. Clerk didn't care but wondered how I ever managed to break them. Six pound sledge "assistance" and improper use for all those years didn't help. Craftsman tools used to be, and I think still are made by Easco Corp so I keep an eye out for them too.

Regarding corporate finance, I read that the KMart unit might be in trouble. Hope it stops there.

Same here.. I don't care if they fix my ratchet/wrench.. or give me a new one.

i didn't abuse this one.. no pipes or anything.. it just stripped out on that one end.

If I need a pipe on something.. i have a set of 3/4" drive tools I can slip the pipe on.. ;)

in any case.. I threw it in the truck and will swing by sears at lunch and see what they say.

*Update*

I went in at lunch and went up to the counter and handed the girl the broke wrench and asked her what I needed to do. She went over to the wall.. grabbed the model that replaced my old one ( looks decent.. but has open gearwork on the ratchet.. don't like that.. ).. rang it up, then enterd full price discount as warranty return.. then handed it over.

i was in and out in under 5 minutes.

I think you will find that Kmart bought Sears, created a Holding Company and renamed that Sears to capitalize on the same.

Here's the press release describing the transaction: http://www.searsholdings.com/pubrel/pressOne.jsp?id=2004-11-17-0003247050

As for the innards supplied on ratchets, and a few other tools, most manufacturers state if the tool is a "serviceable" item just supply the repair kit, and/or the broken part to repair. The problem with that is, is that a 20, 35, and 50 year old ratchet may look alike, but usually the inner components have changed over the years which makes determining the proper kit difficult, so most counterpersons will just hand over the new
tool.
Many private label tools in the US are now owned by Danaher Tools. They list the brands they own on the website, but make lots of private label brands that are not listed. NAPA's US produced lifetime warranted tools are supplied by them, along with the imported GearWrench brand which is marketed through KD Tools. A few years ago I saw in the trade publications where Danaher got the contract to make/supply most of HD's or Lowes in house brand, don't remember which; but several years ago they were listed as the largest of all the "in USA made" hand tool manufacturers.

Well, according to the press release you linked we're both wrong. It was a merger rather than an acquisition.

Hang on a sec, though. A google search says you're right, according to CNN: see Kmart, Sears to merge in $11B deal - Nov. 17, 2004. I stand corrected.

The only non electric hand tool they wouldn't take back was a hand pop rivert tool but they did cut 1/2 price of new one. Years ago this happened
