CK20 won't start

Low 40's is not that cold and shouldn't require glow plugs...although it will get things going faster.

When I crank mine in cold weather...I see white smoke drifting from the exhaust(raw atomized fuel), then black smoke(fuel buning but not hot enough), then the motor will kick off and rattle a bit until it warms up after a minute or 2.

The Kioti EPA engines definitely need good working glow plugs, even at 50F,
in my experience. Older engines start easier.

The OP did not say if he had white or black smoke....this is important.

Here is an easy thing to try: take out filter and crank engine while aiming
a heat gun or hair dryer at the intake hole. My bet is it starts and indicates
the GPs are not working.

Sounds like the fuel shut off solenoid is not working.
That is #20 it has a plunger that moves in and out.

I remember my CK20 not starting one weekend.

I ended up having to disable the electric solenoid to get it to start.

I now use the manual shutoff.

That reminds me, I should look at that again. (it's only been a year or so)

My 1999 isn't an epa engine I guess, just a standard pre-cup and glow plugs. They always need a bit more than a direct injection, which generally have a bit more compression.

I made the comment about the smoke to try an draw out some more info. :D

I've just developed this problem as well. Plenty of crank, plenty of immediate white smoke, but the engine won't fire to life until it cranks a good while. I can cycle the glow plugs once or three times and the timer works, the dash light works, but how do you know if the glow plugs are glowing?

It will start but then it rattles and clatters way more than usual and then runs and starts great the rest of the day.

I tried following the power supply from the GPs but it goes into a harness so no obvious relay to check.

You were the first to mention white or black smoke, Rob. A bunch of
white smoke at startup means the cyls are getting fuel, but nothng is
burning. That allows us to look for something besides the fuel system,
as you know.

I had the L2500DT for several years and mine started pretty easy with
no GP below 60, but at 45 or 50 needed them. It is an indirect injection
engine with about 22:1 compression as I recall. The only DI tractor I had
was only about 18.5:1 comp ratio and used a heated air intake instead of
GPs. I wonder if all DI engines tend to be lower compression....

The Kiotis are about 22:1 indirect injection, BTW.

I don't think any of these small engines were direct injection. My BIL's mid 70's 2 cylinder L-175 is indirect. L2500 definatly indirect. I don't see a ratio in my manual...soemone else can do the math..if it can be done.. :)

compression pressure...512psi to 540, low limit 370psi.

My JD955s were DI...they used the Yanmar 3TN84 engine, which is found in
various forms in tons of other equipment.

I have a 2004 CK-20 gear drive that I cannot get started. It cranks and blows smoke but just won't seem to turn all the way over. I've only got a little over 200 hours on it. So far this is what I've done.

- Checked the battery
- Checked the fuel
- Changed the fuel filter
- Verified fuel was getting to the pump
- Checked that the glow plugs were working using a meter
- Opened the plugs to see if fuel was getting there when I cranked on it

Can anyone think of anything else to look at or what the problem might be?

Thanks

Are you up and running yet?

what's the word ? has the problem been fixed yet ? if so, what was the outcome ?

Hey guys...I've been traveling and haven't had time to get back to the site. I just spent the weekend doing some more work.

Rob - The smoke is white. I checked the fuel lines after the injector pump and I'm getting fuel but when I removed them and cranked the engine I expected a little more pressure. How much pressure should be coming out?

It would shoot the fuel up 3-4 feet. I put the lines back on and cranked it some more to remove the air out of the lines then tightend them fully.I'll move to the glow plugs next since that seems to be the next logic step.

My solenoid looks like it is working fine. I can visually see it open and close. It goes to open after a few seconds after I turn the switch off. Is there a better way to test this? Bearhawk comments make me question if it is really working now.
