Need barn vapor barrier and heating advice.

Six, here is what I paid in December 2007. I bought direct from the Morton salesman. Each roll of insulation fits between the posts of the Morton building. They measure 86 inches wide by 6 inch thick and 40 foot long. I paid $245.00 for each roll which weigh 144 pounds each. I installed the insulation myself. Hope this helps.

Call your Morton salesman and ask him. He should be able to quote you a price right over the phone since he already has the dimensions of your building. Make sure you are sitting down when he tells you the price.

OK I did that this afternoon and wasn't sitting down. He said $20,000 and that it effectively doubles the price of a building. That's a big number. I feel the Amish will come in for substantially less and do a great job if I do it. I had been thinking maybe half that but had no basis for that thought other than beer-talk.


I have avoided Morton because of what appeared to be bait-and-switch tactics. I bought one barn from them a few years ago and they gave me a similar price of "$23,000 or so" for the exact same thing over the phone when I asked. I am an easy customer and this was before the price of steel went up..
In person it jumped to $33,500 but could do it for a little less. After some wrangling and bad feelings I switched to a basic model from Walters Bldg. for $21,000. It's a great builing and 10 ft longer. Salesman was capable and true to his word. Good work crew and a pleasant experience.
I am not a cheapskate but found the Morton experience upsetting.

I know three people who have the Conestoga and they swear by them and they are substantially cheaper but their quality and workmanship are very good. I believe Conestoga uses Amish crews also. I guess it depends on what one wants from a building and how they go about it. If you buy a Morton building at a "farm show" price and make NO CHANGES, it can be a fair price.
For my second building I just wanted machinery storage with no electricity so the basics would do. I did want a Morton so the colors would match but Morton and I couldn't agree.
The Walters bldg matches the color perfectly and my sales guy from Kenton, Oh did way more than I figured. Took the crew longer than Morton. We did have a severe windstorm during construction and before they left that night they braced and cabled and chained everything together so it wouldn't move. It didn't.
I don't know Conestoga but reputation is what sells buildings. I have never heard of a bad Amish-built building.

Also check out Pioneer in your area. (PA,MD). I got quotes from Conestoga, and yes they are very nice buildings, but Pioneer quoted even lower and they build a lot of buildings in my area and are very nice. I ended up building my own for a lot less, but it did take a lot longer than I had planned on.
