How to cut conveyor belt?

Guys, I'm a little spooked about using a chainsaw to cut conveyor belt. What keeps it from grabbing and kicking back?

The 3/4in. belt we used in the mines was tough.

You would think using a chain saw on rubber would give the chain grip and that would make it kick back.

This is coal mine belt and I didnt have any trouble I just took my time and let the saw do the work. I tried a demolition saw and it didnt work well, it smoked a lot and was grappy. Send it down my way and I will cut to length for a nominal fee. Hey this is West Virginia we do finish carpentry with a chain saw around here, as long as your not picky.

I worked on a Habitat house with a guy from West VA. He was all the time talking about making "West Virginia cuts."

We had a lot of fun on that job.

Man, this thread brings back a lot of bad memories

A couple years ago I had to haul blasted rock with my dump truck, so I lined the box with conveyor belt (I think it was 3/4" thick, maybe thicker?) Ended up just using a utility blade with lots of new blades, and keeping it wet with water while cutting. I'd score it first, then go back and cut. And yes, it was a pain

I have been thinking on your need to cut this heavy belting material....and I wonder about using an angle grinder with a cut-off blade to slit the belt? It may burn/melt about as much as it cuts....not sure...just a thought.

I was wondering Foggy...do they sell cut off blades that would fit a 4 inch angle grinder? I would have need of my grinder for some projects if a small cut off blade would fit. And that would save some money from having to buy a separate tool.
