COLD STARTING

   / COLD STARTING #21
Hi,

My machine is MUCH happier to start after the block heater has been plugged in for a few hours. If it's plugged in it starts pretty much like summertime.

I asked around on TBN a bit a few weeks ago, inquiring about the need to heat up the tranny oil as well. The general consensus seemed to be it's OK to run the hydro tranny without a heater as long as you take it easy for the first 10 or 15 minutes. The suggestion of a magnetic heater for the tranny case was made too, and I think I'll do that. We've been between -20 and -43degC over the last week. I haven't had to start my tractor, but if I did I'd prefer to have the tranny heated too.

SJM,
I agree with Galen that you may have a glow plug or two not working. I had to replace mine within the first two years. I have 3 on my 2615. One was shorted, one was open, leaving only one working. Once I replaced them its been starting fine.
I don't remember where the thread is but another member ruined his glow plugs by having a large battery charger hooked to his battery while he cranked it over. He thinks the excess voltage of the battery charger did them in.
Also, your temps in degrees F are similar to mine so you should be using an anti gel additive to your fuel as well. A block heater or lower hose heater would help too. I have a lower hose heater on mine.

I have a 5500. Our temps in winter are in the -20-to 32 degrees area. I installed a VIP block heater in the plug designed for it and also advanced the fuel injection timing about 1/16" on the fuel injector pump. Made a big difference in starting and faster heating up. From the dealer it smoked alot on starting and wouldn't keep up to temperature unless rpm's stayed above 1700 in cold weather.

Hi SJM
I've got a 4110, live in Kansas. I've never tried to start it when the temps were in the teens since it barely starts after getting up to forty. Several times this winter i've started it when it was forty degrees or so with the previous night getting down to 20/25. It takes 8 to 10 times on the glo plug and lots of cranking. I wasn't even sure it was going to start. Called the dealer and he said I would have to install a heater if I expected to use my tractor in the winter. Seeing how it's stored in a shed in the middle of a field with no electricity I guess i've got myself a summer only tractor. :(

Hard to start in the cold is not a charactoristic of the Mahindra 4110. I have been selling 4110's for 7 1/2 years, beginning when I became a Mahindra dealer, and it has been my best selling tractor. One of the things I have done is start the tractors on cold days to see what I could expect when starting them. This helps, when trying to make a sale, to know the starting caractoristics. The 10 series tractors including the 4110 have always started with out problems even at -10 F, only cycling the glow plugs 2 times and then only when it was below zero. The 10 series have been by far the best starting Mahindra models. I would definately say if your 4110 starts hard in the cold there is a good possibility you have some glow plugs not functioning, or some problem with the fuel delivery system. You may contact me if you would like and I will help you all I can.
