i bet you five dollars that when your engine is "cold" -- the OM states to check the oil level when the engine is "cold" -- it's gonna read way over full.

Its been about 2 hours since the motor was run for 5 minutes. I just checked the oil level again and the dipstick is still right at the "full" line.

I agree with you that hot and cold readings will yield different results.

When I was filling engine with new oil, the tractor had been sitting overnight, so the engine was definitely cold at the beginning of the oil "fill" process. I only ran the engine twice during the oil filling process for a total of about 2 minutes, then once the oil level was exactly at full line on the dipstick I ran the engine for about another 5 minutes. Its been sitting for 2 hours now and still reads right at the "full" line on the dipstick. If I get any other results, I'll post.

What timeframe denotes cold? Given the sequence I described, wouldn't you think this is a "cold" engine condition?

Glad to know it's still reading full -- and not overfull!

My interpretation on "cold" from reading my OM is the engine is "cold," and it has not been run before checking the oil level. Although, the OM states that if you run it (the tractor) for more than four (4) hours a day, one is to check the oil level twice. So, I guess one of the checks will be "warm." Especially, when warmer weather gets here in SC, and I'm cutting grass for four or more hours at a time ....

That's my take ....
