Hello,

First I would like to say thanks for all the input. this is a great forum !!

I have been looking for a tractor for the past few months and have it narrowed down to a JD 790, JD 955 if i can a good used one or a Kioti 27 or 30.

I wanted to get a PTO chipper- in the future. It seems high twenties is required for HP. I was thinking will 27 HP from 790 be enough to run one.
Or do I need 30 or above??

Anybody ever try to boost the HP on a 790 with a turbo or something ??
For me the 790 would be great with about 32--35 HP.

Thanks again for all of your input, great group here !!!

I have a Wallenstein BX 42 with my 2305. It's my most expensive implement and the one that has saved me the most work. I used to enjoying burning a lot. Now I chip whatever I can. My tractor rarely knows there is anything there.

790's don't have 27hp at the pto. That's where you need to pay attention. There's definatly a chipper that will work with the 790. You'll just need to make sure your looking at pto hp ratings.

I've got a lot of hours on my 790 running a Liberty / Jinma chipper.

Unless you get up to tree size stuff (4 - 6 inches) it pulls great. Normal limbs and saplings, it gobbles up.
For the big stuff it just can't support the auto-feed speed of my chipper, it's too fast.
If you get a manual feed unit, your fine. For the auto-feed, you'll either have to pause it to let the RPM's build back up, or slow it down assuming your chipper has the cabability.

I also run a Wallenstein BX42, on my Deere 2320 18PTO HP, and i have no problem at all chipping anything that can fit into the chipper (4" or smaller) but most of the time 4" is fire wood for me. As stated the feed rate is the big factor of how well the tractor will handle the wood being fed into the chipper.

I have a bearcat chipper/shredder (70554). I run it off a 2305 with 18 pto hp. It works pretty good until you get hardwoods up to the 4" size. You just have to give it a chance to clear the chips out of the drum and not feed too much at one time.

I have a DR (McKissick) three-point chipper on my 18 pto HP X744 garden tractor. And it will easily gobble anything you can fit in the chute as long as it is no larger than 4 1/2 inches. Mine is manual feed so I can limit the feed rate on the bigger stuff if I don't feel like adding it to the Saturday night firepit. And be happy and accept your tractor and it's engine/capabilities for what it is. If you need something bigger or you need more power and capabilities, you're gonna have to buy something else.
