As far as I know you can use the 43 or unmarked chain. You will have to work within the limits or about one size larger than a grade 70. Look at the DOT site for your state or the federal motor carrier regs.

grade refers to the hard/tough-ness of the chain.
much like bolts where a grade 8 is tougher and harder to break than a grade 3.

3/8 grade 43 chain is rated at 5400# and grade 70 is 6600# not a huge difference but not a huge difference in price.
Plus the grade 70 chain has that beautiful goldish chromate finish, not only looks good but is highly corrosion resistant.

I would get the G70.

And the best thing about grade 70 is, you can generally go down one size in your chain. That makes it lighter! Hefting chains around gets old.. :)

And it's more resistant to rust!

You mean like this nice golden finish? :)

I needed a short piece of logging chain so I bought the unplated grade 43 and plated it at work. This is better then any plating you will get of the shelf. It is a zinc-nickel alloy (87/13) with chromate topcoat finish. We use it on aircraft bearings.

Your original question asked if you could use grade 43 for hauling. The answer was yes but I also agree that for the minimal difference in price get the grade 70 chain. Mike posted the specs for each.

The working load limit of Grade 43, 3/8" chain is 5400 lbs. The working load limit of Grade 70, 5/16" chain is 4700 lbs.

Grade 43 Chain Specs.

Grade 70 Chain Specs.

I stand corrected. I'd remembered them being closer than that and should have checked..

I might add, 5/16 43 is 3900 lbs so it appears 5/16 grade 70 will put you right between grade 43 5/16 and grade 43 3/8" and at 2/3'rds the weight of 3/8's. I'll all for it! :)

I understood what you were getting at, no it wont substitute the 5400# rating of 3/8 G43, but if you needed 4700# or less rating then you wouldn't have to go up to 3/8 from 5/16 you could just go with the G70 5/16.

4700# rated chain on 4 corners of a tractor would be more than enough for any CUT, but most go for the 3/8, myself included.

It is heavy, not the individual pcs, but I put my four 7 footers and 4 binders in a pail for storage, all fit nicely, just couldn't lift it without hurting something :( so I divided them into 2 pails and they are still heavy.

Sweet  how's it done? with electro or hot dip? I'd be tempted to do all my unplated tools with the stuff, like shovels and rakes and what not :)
