Getting rid of Moles/Voles

My pest control guy uses that TALPIRID.COM and swears by it as well. It's pretty expensive, though. You can pick it up at Coastal Farm and Ranch supply.

Skipro3, have you actually seen the dead moles, or are you seeing the absence of mole mounds? I've heard people say it works, but nobody's ever seen a dead mole that died from eating the gum. Other people have tried the Juicy Fruit thing and say it doesn't work.

No I have not seen a dead mole, gopher actually in my case, but they are gone so I suppose it doesn't matter. Here's a link to what I was explaining from someone who knows;

Moles Be Gone - Mole Abatement That Works!

He has a pretty good report and lots of photos. I was able to duplicate his experience only in my case it worked faster for me than for him.

BTW, I know I had gophers because I had been trapping them in a couple of those steel jaw traps by the dozens without making much of a dent in them. With the gum, they are gone.

Spiked mole traps...they work well once you learn how to use them and they provide you the satisfaction of seeing the dead little creaures.

Setting them is easy. 1st step is to press down all the mole tunnels to determine which tunnels are active. 2nd step is to depress a section of the active tunnels the width of your foot, and then set the spiked mole trap across the tunnel. It is quite satsifying to do a mole trap walk in the morning and find a trap sprung and a little critter impaled under ground.

I had a mole issue at my old house, and with the use of 6 spiked mole traps I wa able to stop them from penetrating my property. I had tried smoke and poison previously with no effect.

Skipro3 I think I will try this method with the gum flavored with worm sounds yummy hopefully to a mole. I think I will also try to build to a rodenator.

I will try the gum first see how it works, then the thumper. Thumper might be more fun though.

Why would a gopher have any interest in a worm bait? Mole, yes.

One thing that I use is to get some Calcium Carbide and throw a few chunks down a hole and add water. Wait a few minutes and throw a match in. be sure to throw the match in and don't stand next to the hole. You'll loose your eyebrows. Calcium Carbide and water make acetylene gas. Same stuff the old miners used in Carbide lamps.

Where would one get this?

Thanks

I have to vouch for the Talpirid also. Tried the juicy fruit (lots of it) tried the spike trap. Did the grub treatment. Tried some stuff that is sprinkled on the ground and is supposed to repel them. Nothing.
A guy at work told me about the Talpirid and I tried it. No moles for 3 years.
Mashing down the runs never worked for me. With my ground it is hard to tell if they have pushed it up again unless I scalp the grass down to the ground.
The instructions I got with the talpirid said to use a dowel or small broom stick to poke holes in the runs. If it is repaired in the next couple of days then the run is active. Poke a hole in the active run with the stick, put a worm in and cover the hole with a board or something to block the light so they dont try to repair the hole, this also helps keep animals out of the bait.
I had moles every year for 10 years while I tried everything to get them. One treatment and they dissapeared. It's been three years and now I have one working in the corner of my yard.
If I remember right it was about 50 bucks for the box but I only used half of it. I am going to try the other half but they may not be any good now. If I have to buy new It will be worth it if it is under 100 dollars.

I don't know, but they love them! My neighbor's are getting close I noticed today. I put some worm flavored gum out and went through 6 sticks in about 20 minutes. That is going to be one sick gopher. These are pocket gophers I think. They have a "pocket" in the flap of skin on their cheek where they stash grass. It's kinda like a ear flap on a dog's ear.

This was an article on the news tonight. Another Squirrel bites the dust!

Spokane parks to detonate squirrels

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS Associated Press Writer
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - The Finch Arboretum is being overrun by ground squirrels, and Spokane Parks and Recreation is bringing in some special artillery.

The agency is using a special machine called the Rodenator Pro to detonate some of the estimated 100 to 150 squirrels tearing up the grounds.

Shades of Carl Spackler, the gopher-hating groundskeeper from "Caddyshack."

The Rodenator Pro pumps propane and oxygen into the tunnels of squirrels, then sends an electric spark that causes an explosion. The shock waves kill the squirrels and collapse their tunnels - but in a humane way, the agency said.

Spokanimal, which is the local animal shelter and Humane Society chapter, was caught by surprise by Monday's announcement.

"You're kidding," Director Gail Mackie said when she learned the news. "That borders on cruelty."

Mackie said she would investigate the practice.

The parks department is warning area residents that it plans to blast squirrels all week, and to not be alarmed by noises that sound like gun shots. Parks officials said police have already been called to the arboretum by people who heard the explosions.

Timing is crucial. Parks officials said they want to detonate their prey before the animals start reproducing.

Parks officials said ground squirrels have been a minor problem for years, but their population is, well, exploding.

The squirrels dig tunnels and holes that people can trip on or fall into, the agency said. They eat new tree roots, can spread disease and are spreading to neighboring yards.

Gas bombs were tried in the past, but were not effective, the agency said.

Enter the Rodenator, a product whose workings have been captured on numerous YouTube videos. The company is based in Midvale, Idaho, and promises on its Web site that its product is effective against the "saber-toothed gopher."

This is a old thread but not a new problem.

My property has Prairie Dog's and we have a Rodenator that we are convinced does not kill them. We could spend hours blasting holes and the very next morning we would see whole families running around. Maybe we need to inject more propane and oxygen before blasting but the explosion is pretty violent. We generally inject the gasses for 30-45 seconds each hole and have to wait for a calm day otherwise the wind will dilute the gasses and minimize the explosion.

We had much better luck with tainted grain but hate the thoughts of continually putting this in our ground.

Trying to research the Carmon monoxide machines and I'm confused about the high pressure type versus the low pressure type and their effectiveness.

Don't mind shooting them but after one shot they are gone for hours. Way too slow of an eradication program for my liking.

Thanks for any insight on the matter!
