Are new tractors as goods as old ones?

A question.....Do you log 2500 to 3000 hours per year on your tractors? We do. (Commercial mowing contractor, mowing highway right-of-ways) It would be completely ridiculous to expect 25 years, even 13 years at that rate of usage. The 2-1/2 year old 6430 isn't worth much more than 1/2 what it was 2-1/2 years ago........

Do you put 3000hrs a years on your 38 years old Massey you are comparing it to?

My dad is retired and we don't farm anymore but we still have a stable of good running old iron. 2 D-17's, an 8050, and 180 represent Allis-Chalmers while the 860 is of Ford fame. I doubt very seriously that the "new iron" currently offered for sale now will have the longevity as these legendary icons. OOPS, forgot about the cub low boy.

My little old 1720 is the first 4 wheel assist we ever had here on the farm. We used a FEL on the 860 to move round bales after we quit putting up squares. 4 wheel assist would have been nice but that little 860 did a great job. Dad kept the NH square baier to help out the neighbors put up around 700 squares or so a year. Funny how he got a round baler after I left for college. lol

Since i live in a flat area.. I don't even own any 4wd units anymore... traded them... For me.. a larger 2wd serves me better than a smaller 4wd.

My old 850 moves round bales... would be nice if she had diff lock.. but so far the steering brakes make up for the lack of the dif lock..

Duff I think you are missing the point ( intentionally? ).

FWJ said it would not be financialy sound to keep the 6430's running.. check back a page. too many doo-dads, bells and whistles and electronics.. vs a very basic machine like his MF.. which will only require 'wear' parts.. like bearings and clutches.. etc.. what are not $hard$ to come by.

20 years ago my Grandpa said the same thing about a 4455 with a digital dash

He said in 25 years it will be parked and you will still be running the MF265

Well it hasn't been quite 25 years yet but don't see giving up on the 44' in the next 5 years or even the next 25

But he was partially correct, we still run the 265

In another 25 years the 6430's technology will seem simple

Let's take a look at that rather misleading question you just posed.

1. I WASN'T comparing the usage of the two as you would like people to believe in order to further your arguement.

2. In ANOTHER 38 years, the MF will STILL be tractor technology in it's most basic form. The 6430 will still be a maze of electronics, plastic, emissions systems, and transmission technology that seems to be baffling even factory trained Deere service techs ALREADY.

Obviously I think the 6430 is as good as it gets NOW, or I wouldn't own 3 of them. But the idea that the technology used in them is as timeless as tractors built 30 or 40 years ago is absolutely absurd.

One thing I would also keep in mind is that only good tractors get to be old tractors. So when you look at an old tractor, it has already gone through a "filtering" process. Truly bad tractors either were put on the scrap heap years ago or they hardly got any hours.

The electrical items in the future might not be much harder to replace than that old bearing on the 30 year old tractor. I know some things are not as strong like the metal they put into tractors, but it might not be that bad. Really the only way to tell will be the test of time.

I am guessing that you did not look at a Fendt, or any of it's offsrping...

I totally agree Bill. OUt trusty old 35 has had a long reliable life, and is awaiting resto. I will let you know in 38 years just how it performs, and also hoping our 1523 will be working right beside it.

So I am guessing that you are good to go for the upcoming owing season??
