INTERNATIONAL 766 80 hp; 2WD Drive; Factory wheel and front end weights, factory canopy, working T/A.

They are asking $7,000. Now the tires are shot paint is is bad it has all the gauges, ROPS, no structure rust just cosmetic and from what I can tell everything seems to be on the tractor. As of now I do not know the hours. How much do y'all think it's worth? And here's a noob question......what's a T/A?

How many hours?
The 766 was made from 1971-76. Gas and diesel versions were available. I assume the one you're eyeballing is a diesel.
The average trade in value (what dealers would give) ranges from $2500 to $3500.
The average resale value (what dealers get on a resale) ranges from $3900-$4600.
The high resale value ranges from $4500-$5600.
The weights and canopy are not big ticket items.
With bad tires, I'd say it's not worth more than $4500.

My 2008 Mahindra 5525 (54 hp engine, 45 hp pto, 2WD, partial constant mesh transmission) is a simple, old-fashioned, heavy (5370 lb without FEL, weights, loaded tires) tractor with no plastic in place of sheet metal. The base price is around $13K.

I think new tractors are a different beast than the old ones. We demand things like versatility, low emissions, style and comfort. These things come at a price - maybe not so much dollar wise because we can get accessories from cheaper sources - but the added features make the machine inherently more unreliable because there is so much more that can and will go wrong with it.

Compare the 766 with a new machine that comes with A/C, fancy transmission... the new tractor is like buying a 'power everything' car, nice to have when it is new and everything works - sucks to buy one that is 10 years old!

Good Afternoon naegling62,
$7000 is too high for a tractor with bad tires and cosmetically in bad shape ! Just the tires alone will run you some big $$$ !

Here is one I found with new rubber and cosmetically in very nice shape !

$7000 for this tractor, and that may be a bit high ! Remember that you can easily get parts for these machines but they aint cheap ! The bigger the tractor the bigger the bill ! ;)

To answer the question, "...what is a T/A?"

A T/A is a torque amplifier. It is a planetary gearset in the rear end which effectively doubles the number of gears. It gives you a low range for each of the gears, slowing the ground speed and increasing the torque, hence the name. Forward on the lever is high (normal) and you pull back sharply without the clutch to get to low. It is to be used for short periods to get through a tough spot then shifted back to high. Never go down a hill in low, as it will freewheel and get away from you.

I agree with the others.. You can likely find old iron inthe same hp and age range cheaper.

I wouldn't go under 70hp for your size operation.

This weekend I saw fords int he 8000, 8600, and 9700 models in the 4500-6500$ rnge... all good rubber.. all probably 105pto hp or better. ( not sure on the 9700 pto hp .. )

rubber for a large rear tractor tire will scare the pans off of you..... now think of that X2.

Two biggest problems with the 66 series IH was cavitation problems and the TA.
I would easily give 7 grand for a 766 that was in good shape. Watch out for a lot of blowby.

I had a 80's Kubota that I replaced with a 99 Kubota and the difference was night and day.

The 80's was built like a tank with real metal, the 99 was built with what seemed like tin foil.

Even the step to get on the 99 model would darn near bend when I stepped up on the tractor.

I got rid of the 99 model and still am using the 80's model and she's running strong.

I purchased a IH 706 tractor working T/A, good tires, fairly good shape, with knowledge of the previous owner for under $2500 a couple of years ago. Now this is the narrow front end a wide front end should be worth a little more. I tend to like the older tractors but if money was no object and I had to get the farm work done comfortably I would buy a new tractor in a heartbeat. If you buy the right size tractor with a little extra capacity these new tractors handle and operate much easier and faster. I bought a nice cab tractor to do our heavier tillage work and it really doesn't seem like hard work to get the job done. A/C and heat, radio, a comfortable seat and the ability to drive and talk on the cell phone are all necessary justifications in purchasing a $60k tractor.
