While I was waiting for the clay spoil to dry from my latest culvert installation, I decided to invest some time restoring a trail connection from an upper farm field to the abandoned Town road. The skidders had created the trail as a shortcut two years ago.
There were three low-cut stumps in the middle of the trail. I ripped out a 12" pine stump quite easily, and then went on to attack a 30" stump. It took about an hour to excavated and pull it out. As usual, there were big rocks chinked right in to the root systems, but the plethera of small, angular softball to basketball sized rocks were the real PITAs. Asual, the backhoe was impressive, but I would say that stump was the largest, and the most recently cut, that I would tackle.
I began backfilling with the backhoe, and then started with the loader - and PPIIISSSTTT!!! Dag Nabbit

a well-positioned over-achieviing branch punctured my tire, shooting Rimgard out like a hose! I quickly rolled the hole to the top and stopped the senseless beet juice fertilizing. The offending branch was duly punished.
Well, the programs was to walk back to the house and get the plug kit, the generator and the compresor, and drive it out with the truck. Since the hole was large, I had to double-up two plugs. That went fine. But when I tried to run the compressor off my little 2500 watt generator. So, remembering that my neighbor has one, I went down to borrow it.
Uh oh, it only a 2800 watt. I asked her when the last time it was run: "Never". How old is it? "12 years old".

Needless to say, I had to drain the little bit of fuel (read: gel) clean the carb and fuel lines, etc. 1/2 hour later, it fired up after a bit of cussing. It only ran the compressor a few seconds up to 30psi before kicking the breaker. So I'd dump the air, and reset the breaker, dump the air, etc. I had the tire off the ground by extending the backhoe outrigger, and step by step I got enough air in the tire to get it home. I don't think I hurt the compressor.
At least my neighbor will have a generator that runs when needed.... I need a bigger portable generator!
Before I could get out of the woods, I had to backfill the stump hole to clear the trail. That went swimmingly, as the plug held up well. I got to the house and filled the tire, and I checked it this morning and it looks good.
