I could not plow that straight for that far even if I had a laser guided tractor with military grade GPS. Years of practice and tons of patience I guess..........

It takes practice, but there is one tip that sure helps. DO NOT look at the front wheels, DO NOT look back any more than you have to, and keep your eyes focused towards the far end of the field. Looking at "short term goals" tends to cause more steering corrections than is really needed.

And lots of practice.....

JB4310, in your pics, it appears that your mud scraper on your coulters are a tad close to the discs..you will eat thru them if you keep them that way.. we always set them about 1/2 inch off just to pull off any "clods". Nice Plow!! Looks good!! BobG in VA

Bob, they ARE set a little too close, but those aren't really "mud scrapers", although they're probably being used as such in this case. Those are Jointers. They're INTENDED to plow a small strip of sod just ahead of the plow bottom, tossing it towards open plowed furrow, and UNDER the slice cut by the main portion of the plow bottom. Ever see a plowed sod field and there's a green edge of the sod showing? Jointers are supposed to eliminate that green edge. As mentioned, they should clear the coulters by 1/4" to 1/2", and should run with the point approx. 2-1/2" deep (below surface of unplowed ground)

I got a rare oprutunity to do some plowing saturday afternoon at Oscars, my 95 year old friend.

JB.

Good Afternoon John,
Nice pics thanks ! In that second pic it appears that the plow frame is tilted to the left, or does it just look that way ? ;)

Hi Scotty,
I see what your saying about the plow being tilted like that, I just don't know enough about plows to tell you why

While I was plowing Oscar stopped me and had me crank the lift arm adjuster up even more on the right side, said it was digging to deep I think? maybe that's how you set the depth, just on the one side??

I was thinking about the title to this thread today and was gonna start my own, "Yesterdays excavating technology ......Today".
Was looking all day to borrow a 4 ft box blade/scraper to dig a base out for a walk, I have a 5 footer but the walk will only be 3 ft wide so I didn't want to over dig it by 2 ft.

Well I couldn't find a 4 ft box so my helper recommended that I ask my old friend Oscar to borrow his 3 pt scoop, at first I thought it was a dumb idea, but after weighing all the options I figured it was worth a shot. I had fixed the scoop for him last fall and welded a cutting edge on it also. Never thought I'd be asking to borrow it with all my modern equipment.

It's around 30 inches wide, he got it as part of a package deal back in 1948 with his Ford 8n, along with the plow shown in my pics.
Man! what a handy attachment, capable of moving a pretty hefty scoop of dirt very efficiently, made several passes down the middle and cut what was left on the sides with a shovel. Starting raining so I couldn't finish up, but that scoop saved us a lot of time, If I didn't have a loader I would definitely own a scoop.

BobG and Farmwithjunk, I will look at the plow closer next time I'm over my friends to see if I can make any adjustments to those scrapers as you have pointed out, Thanks.

JB.

JB4310,
real quickly, your plow frame, with the tractor tire in the furrow, should be level both left to right and front to rear. Control your depth with your three point position control and draft if you have it.

It really looks like the plow is pretty much crooked in your pics

Good Afternoon John,
Wow that scoop really can do some significant work ! No wonder they still make 3 pt scoops ! ;)
