Pardon my ignorance, but would someone explain "topdress"?
Topdressing means to cover the lawn with thin layer of the material of your choice. Usually good top soil. The intent is to improve the quality of the soil and smooth out the rough spots.

The first thing I would try is getting a lawn roller and rolling the yard while it is wet.

I have to agree with BruceWard. I believe Lawn_King (TBN member) who is in this business has also mentioned using a lawn roller. If I recall correctly he once rented a large roller (the type that is used for smoothing out asphalt) to smooth out a lawn. And of course if the ground is saturated the better the roller would work.

I think I will try rolling first...(although I think I may have missed the season for it..my lawn is very wet in the early spring ..lots of clay.....and seems to be hardening up now) If that dont work I will have to till and do the whole thing over in late summer.

If it is bad enough that you are considering tilling/blading, I woundn't waste money on a lawn roller. They don't do much more than flatten out the mole hills. The biggest rollers that you can buy at tsc or wherever are 24" by 4 foot and just don't weigh enough. Only like 600lbs with water, which may sound like a lot but you are distributing that weight over a large area and don't get much compaction.

This is why we opted to build our own roller. 38" diameter and 4 foot long. Weighs 600lbs dry and can hold another ~1900lbs of water. It really does a good job.

A substantial roller may do the trick. An aggressive drag harrow (with aggressive tines) will break up the surface so water penetrates better and it will tend to knock off the high spots much more aggressively than it attacks the low or even parts.

Considerable dragging will tend to make a pasture look more like a golf course and can help level your yard too.

That sounds like advice from a fellow with a new toy and the urge to drag it.:D

Harrowing is a delightfully relaxing activity.:D

Egon, Your inside info is unerring in its accuracy. I'm not sure how well it would work in mud or under water. Next week may be dry enough to permit getting in the field. Decisions decisions, I am behind in my logging too.
