What bothers me is Canadian and American tax dollars went to these companies to keep people employed, and now they're looking at shipping these jobs overseas? That ain't right.

Our government has bought up the Dutch part of ING bank, because there was a severe risk of them tumbling over, because they lost so much on the USA housing market. The tax payer is paying for their irresponsible business.

Last sunday i was watching the European formula 1 racing: ING is the main sponsor of the Renault F1 team... I turned off the TV because i didnt want to see MY TAX MONEY being wasted by the millions...

The outcry is the same on both sides of the ocean: The taxpayer, the worker and the little businessman are paying for the poor management of the big companies and banks, which then consume a whole year of state tax income to keep them upright because the little man will suffer even more when these companies DO fall...

We're all on the same boat. At the company i work, the service department is going a bit slower, but at the assembly department, 75% of the jobs are scrapped because nothing gets sold these days..

I dont think its a veiled threat. Just like the TV, tool and other manufacturers before them, GM sees big profit potential by using chinese manufacturing. Its only natural that they talk about moving to take advantage of it. No employee benefits and lax environmental standards... Its a win-win for them. However, i think it wont fly with the consumer...I hope.

And then, theres the recent development that Chrysler is trying to sidestep the (IMHO reasonable) cap on executive salaries, by saying that their top executives are now Fiat employees?? Thats the thanks that taxpayers, employees and dealership owners get for all their sacrifices?

Sounds like upper management in all these companies are still as crooked as ever.

They all do it, not just GM. Ford's been building F-650/750's in mexico for 10 years. Chrysler builds Dodge/Cummins trucks in mexico and has been since 2000.

Mexico Austrailia and Europe are one thing, China is something different entirely. China has no respect for copyright, standards, quality control (look no further than the milk / dog food scandals) or their own citizens / environment.

Id rather that my tax dollars wernt being used to ship jobs to china. If it was up to me GM and Chrysler wouldnt be on the receiving end of government money at all.

Ive just read where GM is likely not going to repay the 15B gov't "loan".

Quote:"Reuters' source indicated that the new government strategy for GM would include extending the U.S.' credit line to the newly formed company and forgiving the majority of the $15.4 billion federal loans to the automaker."

Defiantly not. See my post 54.

Not to mention that the Chinese manufacturers are setting themselves up for entry into the US (companies like Chery and BYD). They're looking at using existing companies like Walmart or taking over the Saturn dealership network. Do you want the roads full of these (unsafe in my opinion) vehicles? I know i dont.

And you know the typical walmart shopper will lap these things up in droves. "You mean i can get a car for 6995? Who cares if its made in china to whatever standards, I want cheap!"

That's not the auto company's fault, that's what the American public wants....cheap prices.

No one says you have to buy from Walmart or China. Last I checked, we still have choices.

Correct, but last time I checked, Walmart (90% Chinese goods sold) is doing a very brisk business.

If Chinese cars were imported to the US though GM, Ford or Dodge dealers, as long as they passed some sort of minimum safety inspection, they would sell very well.

I wouldn't even sit in one.

And i wont.

Yes we still have choices, but for how long? If chinese imports take off, youll see auto manufacturing become like all the other mass produced goods. Can you name a made in US tv?

Sometimes theres more important things than the lowest price.

Totally agree.

However, Chinese vehicles imported into the US isn't going to be GM's fault. The Chinese can import vehicles into the US anytime they want thank you. We have a free trade policy that allows entrepreneurs to import them just like they import Jinma tractors.

How long do you think we can hold this off from happening? They are the pre-eminant world superpower in manufacturing. It took me a while to accept that, but it's true. It's over for US dominance in manufacturing. Our gov't has driven manufacturing off shore. I live near a huge steel mill. It's owned by a foreign company. Crap, even the companies we have left aren't even American owned! Budweiser, Case, New Holland, Chrysler, etc all foreign owned!

China is already importing machinery into the US. Cars & trucks are inevitable and coming soon.

Most Americans are suckers for cheap junk. I'm not, but most are.
