I think that may still be to big for your tractor

I would go with a 9' New Holland or similiar

How much do you need to mow?

I did a seach on the net and found a new holland page that says it needs 60 hp to run and weight is approx 4800 lbs. I cut around 160 acres. In 2 more years I should be up to 320/400 acres to cut.

You did not mention much about your 7040, they can be setup light or heavy. Is yours 2wd or 4wd? Cab or rops? Cast iron rear wheels? Filled rears? Front end loader on that machine? What did you eat for lunch (just kidding there ...).
Sorry, I'm not familiar with the power requirements for those implements.

My 7040 is 4wd, cab, cast iron rears, loader, no tire fill. For lunch today I may have chili.

I would think your 7040 could handle it, my FIL has a 9' NH mower conditioner (cant remember the model, it has a sicklebar to cut and rubber rollers to crimp) that we pull behind a L3830GST with loaded rear tires. It handles it very well as long as you keep the speed up (it leaves uncut grass when you put it down in 3rd or 4th) and aren't in super thick grass.

If you are cutting that kind of acreage I wouldn't mess around with a sickle mower. A discbine would be the only way to go then IMO.

Actually it was a valid question. A center pivot haybine or disc mower conditioner puts different and greater lateral forces on a tractor than a side pull model, especially on hills and while turning. If you intend on covering 300-400 acres of hay ground in the near future, a center pivot machine is probably something you should look at, but you don't have near enough tractor to run one safely and effectively.

I'm not sure if I have this correct. The 499 Newholland 12ft. I'm looking at is a center pivot machine which requires 60 hp and weighs about 4800 lbs. Still not big enough to cover off these acres?

You will need a bigger tractor (at least 85-90pto), and preferably cabbed, to run a 9' + discbine.
