At work one of our jobsite foremen has an older dell latitude 610 ( I believe ).. is an older pentium III 1.2ghz, but originally came with XP, and has otherwise been a decent machine for them to beat up onthe jobsite. Has a usb2 card in it's pcmcia slot as the usb broadband modem would not work in the laptops stock usb1? port.. ( works fine inthe usb2 port on the card slot. ).

There is one site we use that is giving the pc problems.. the site has all html links on the home page.. these links navigate fine.. however if you do a search, and there are multiple pages, the 'next' ' previous' and 'last' links apear to be javascript not html.. and if you do a right click and properties over them.. it says unsupported protcal.. or unrecognized.. etc.... in any case. clicking the link brings up a 'can't get there' explorer window with the usualy option to try to refresh or diagnose the connection.

machine has ie7, and for kicks yesterday I downloaded a new copy of java 6 (13). still errors.

any ideas?

thanks

( by the way.. other office pc's and another laptop maneuver fine within the website.. so it is not a site specific problem AFAIK )

Not sure at all if this will help, but I'll give it a shot.

When I had trouble with Java script I found that it had been disabled. I kept loading it and it would never work. I found the problem in the Tools menu, for some reason the Java script add on had been disabled. Once I enable it everything worked fine.

Probably a slim chance that this is your problem, but take a look for what its worth.

Yep.. Already checked there to make sure it wasn't disabled, but thanks for the reply.

There are a bunch of different versions of Java. We have legacy programs that won't work with newer versions and newer programs that won't work with older Java. It is a real headache.

Anyhow, does Java work on other websites? (could be the website)

Does that website work on other computers? (could be the computer)

Does he have any pop-up blockers, anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-virus, zone alarm, etc... that could be blocking java and giving you the unsupported protocol error?

Oh, yeah... can you try Firefox to eliminate a problem with I.E.?

As reported in the first message, the website works on other computers, that computer works on other websites.. but I didn't check to see if the other websites were using java.

I was going to re-download IE7, but grabbed firefox instead, just as a test, since it was about half the size.... it don't work either....

If FF and Ie are broken then its a problem with the Java install.

Are you sure the user hasnt downloaded and installed any pop up blockers or toolbars or anything similar?

Go here and follow the instructions for removing Java : How do I uninstall Java on my Windows computer ?

Download and reinstall a new copy of java and you should be good.

I'd uninstall Java, then reinstall it after first checking the anti virus, spyware, etc..

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I've been having similar problems with a website that I go to. Could see the main forum page, but when trying to view a thread I would get a Javascript error. Javascript was enabled, cleared the cache, redownloaded Java. . . nothing helped. After reading this thread I went and uninstalled the 3 versions of Java on my PC and redownloaded. BINGO!!! Thanks for the help.

Now back to the originally scheduled thread. :D

I second that, less Micro$oft on one's computer is always better.

I wasn't implying IE was the problem, rather, trying the other browser to troubleshoot the problem. I use Firefox most of the time. However, there are some problems with it as well. For instance, some websites have not been designed to work with Firefox. Also, Firefox does not always play well with corporate security.

I did find a neat feature for Firefox where you can right click on a link and choose to open it in an IE tab. It uses the IE engine in the Firefox browser. That gets me around the few places where Firefox does not work correctly.

I'm still waiting to hear back from the foreman whether this fixed his problem or not.. I removed all java. plus some other junk he had installed, put in firefox ( works ok.. ) re downloaded java while his pop up blocker was disabled...

We do have to access a few websites that are IE only .. so will see where this goes... Am hoping this fixed his problem at least for now... will post back when i hear more.

Are you attempting an install over the internet or a download? The reason I ask is that we have had trouble installing Java over the network. Instead, we download the files to the computer, then run the install locally.

Another nice thing about downloading it and saving it is that if it messes up, you don't have to download it again. ;)

We do this so much at work that we have a network share with most products like Adobe Acrobat Reader, flash player, java, etc... in it as well as printer drivers, OS cds, and other program CDs. Seems we always need to download something. For instance, if we add a memory stick or replace a HD, some Microsoft products detect a "major hardware change" and require teh installation CD to verify that you aren't making illegal copies.

Anyhow, our software store really does save time.:)
