Rotella 5w-40 synthetic

I have been using the rotella synthetic 5-40 in all my stuff for 15 yrs or so
went to it just for the 5 in there for cold starts of my diesel van then liked the oil so well I have used nothing else for years now
I could start the old 7.3 at -30 without plugging it in not a really smart thing to do but just being able to have the capability of starting it was enough for me
I tried extending my oil changes with it for a while would slap in a new filter every 8000 miles and send in a sample for annalasys but after 32000 I decided it really should be changed even if the sample sheet said extend another 10000

If you started a old 7.3L at -30F using that oil you are/were WAY over max for the oil and I bet 100 to 1, you glowed it for some long length of time. And you are adding extra wear to your oil.

Problem with R5w-40 is the pouring temp is -36C and the pumping temp is way below that. I have tried R5w-40 at -20F and glowed tractor for 5 seconds and nope. That is my MAX for glowing since glows are more $$ then a better oil to help. I tried a synthetic oil (group 4/5) and same temp/and time and started...Not even talking about better UOA based on baselines.

And when you add a new filter you are adding new oil and that helps the oil. What is you miles per year? How many UOA have you do on the oil? Oil filter used? I could do on and on. But the old 7.3 (before Powerchoke) were VERY easy on oils...

My Massey 1533 calls for 10w-30, and I have been using regular Rotella 10w-30 but its hard to find. Would the synthetic 5w-40 be good to use? How about using the 5w-40 in small gas engines like generator?
My 2004 dodge cummins diesel PU calls for 15w-40 but I use schaeffers supreme 9000 5w-40 full syn.oil.The rotella 5w-40 full syn.in gal.jug was around $27 bucks at wally world.I bought the schaffers in gal.jug for $17 bucks.I also run it in my diesel Kubota RTV 900 and Kubota Zero turn mower with no issues.coobie

Around here, the Rotella 5W-40 synthetic was around $18 at Wallyworld, I just switched on my Kubota and will start using it with my Cummins. IIRC Dino-Rotella is $11-12 a gallon, the difference isn't that great now.

Any feedback on running a diesel rated oil like this in a gasser? I have always run Mobil 1 in my cars. I'd like to switch to Rotella Syn just to have one less type of oil laying around, plus it's less expensive.

Not a prob. A lot of guys like to run Rotella T (dino) in their motorcycles.

It is rated SM which is the most recent gasoline rating so you would be good to go with any year of car.

Like Brian said, just make sure it has the proper "S" category API rating for your vehicle. Some diesel engine oil formulations can poison gasoline engine catalytic converters. Preferably it should be SL rated at the least with SM being preferred.

I agree but have heard the same things about ZDDP in oil for years and have yet to see anything.

The SAE and ASTM have done several studies that showed considerable plugging of converters if engine oils with high levels of zinc, phosphorus and ash. That's the whole reason the spec's on maximum limits of these additives have changed over the years.

I could careless about those spec and MIL ones. Amsoil was WAY over the limit for years, along with others, and I have yet to see or hear anyone with issues.
