Tried new shut off procedure

In this case it's more a Kohler engineering problem. Just about every mower made with the Kohler engine does this. The 1450 required idling before shutoff and the newer ones require high throttle position before shutoff. If we had to do that with our cars I'm sure there would be a quick recall.

Bob, I had the smallest Toro ZTR with an 11 hp Briggs & Stratton engine that did the same thing. And the manual said to turn the key off with the throttle wide open. If you did as the manual said, no problem, but I tried turning it off at idle a couple of times and each time was surprised it didn't blow the muffler apart.

I run 89 octane , shut it down with the throttle in any position and no backfires.

I have a 1554 with 27hp Kohler, a 3225 with a 21??hp, and a JD655 with a 21?? hp Kohler and they all do it, the JD needed the muffler replaced at some point in its life (over 700 hour range), however the previous owner said the muffler was very rusty and got holes in it, backfire related, I don't know.
If I go 3/4 throttle it seems to do it very infrequent, Or if I let it idle a while its doesn't do it. Its a minor quirk and it doesn't bother me a whole lot, however my father-in-law has a Mtd yardmachines, and I almost think it has a Briggs but it may have a single cylinder kohler and it backfires really bad, and he lives in a fairly populated area and its got to be really annoying there.

Yup, the Yardmachines 17hp intek single I had "afterfired" just like my 2544 if not throttled up prior to or just after killing the ignition. That's another option for those that just can't get over the high RPM engine s/d deal. 1) Idle the engine. 2) Kill the ignition 3) Very quickly blip the throttle up all the way. It works.

The first time I tried it, it worked. The last time it backfired although not real loud. Maybe I didn't open it quick enough.
