How safe is Manual Trans vs HSD

I vote for HST... all day long...

I try to do all the suggested things... think ahead, go slow, etc.....

nevertheless, I frequently thank my stars that I have an HST....

the precision speed control.... SLOW CREEP under high load.... it allows more precision under more conditions than I have ever found with any other tranny.... from a SAFETY standpoint alone, I believe the HST is worth the extra expense.

Other than price, I can't think of any negative points and could list more than 10 positive ones.
A lot of tractors come standard with HST so it don't cost anything.

LBrown, I've told you before and telling you again "You have to sell one of those BX's and get someting different to keep up with other than BX's.":) You obviously have yourself lost in the BX world and there's a "bigger" world out there. BX's are hydros but when you go up in size then they cost vs gear.

It costs something against the similar "equivalent" tractor with a gear trans.

Sure, there are model numbers that have HST bundled in the "base" price, just as there are different model numbers that have gear trans bundled.
I wouldn't expect a model with the letters "HST" in the model number to be available with a gear trans, but there is almost certainly a model with a "G" that has same/similar HP rating, lift capacity, same loader, tire/wheel size, etc and that model will be priced lower.

For the $AME DOLLAR$ you can usually get "more tractor" with a gear trans.
According to where you are on the price curve this might mean 5 or 10 HP, it might mean bigger implements, it might mean a Cat 2 instead of a Cat 1, or a Cat 1 instead of a Cat 0.

Heck, it might even mean more capacity to do the same tasks more SAFELY.

Anyway, I think the next big argument here will be about black vs other colored tires - a FAR more important issue.

I think that the manufacturers are telling you that the closer you get to a hydro if not a hydro the better you are!

Look at the newer transmissions that are used in the ag tractors!

Some will always prefer the older gear drive designs and they will do fine with them as that is a choice they made although many when they have the convienience of a hydro or in a larger tractor with a hydraulic forward reverser or power shift they will rave about it.

Try and find a new garden tractor that is made with a gear drive transmission! The options are not there! That should tell you something.

We only sell a few gear drives a year in any class that a hydro is built.

Now for why, it would be hard to find someone that couldn't drive a hydro with a little instruction as they are close to driving an automatic car. Wives, children, neighbors can all be tought how to drive without having to listen to grinding gears or the clutches being slipped and later repairs being needed. I find it's easier to do the tough work or hand work myself and get someone else to drive the tractor.

For the person who goes to sell a used compact we are finding some of the gear drives the hardest to sell.

Just like not gettting one four wheel drive thinking that you might be saving a thousand dollars at purchase, it will be two thousand at trade-in time for a loss in many areas.

I'd think that after you've had a hydro that it would be very hard for you to move away from one.

Either one is as safe as the operator. Idiot proofing costs a lot of money, just look at all the "Safety" features that has been added to autos and it still doesn't stop the idiots.

One thing the gear heads never think about or consider is how a gear drive limits or deprives the handicapped or disabled.

I have only automatic cars trucks and tractors because I have physical limitations that hinder my using a geared tyranny .

Texasjohn--Nice summery of the advantages of HST

Reg--Your convoluted command of the Engish language astounds me, but here goes...
1. Your safety concerns from an analytical standpoint classify you as either a genius or a victim of over-analysis.
2. You're really a supercomputer disquised as a human; therefore us mortals will just have to rely on HST as another tool in the safety bag and not be able to perform like you.
3. I sincerely hope "a gotcha" doesn't come your way because you will never be able to live with yourself.

You do have an interesting thought about red tires, though. But, you know what they say about the chemical red dye...

Don't know about the big ag tractors, but in the CUT arena I've had gear and HST and I'll take the HST hands down anyday..Especially if you using it for FEL work and mowing. Cultivating would be a different issue I'm sure, as a gear machine might actually be easier to use. Just my uneducated opinion.

Bawhahahaha! You beat me to it! It must be difficult for Reg to be so excrutiatingly perfect and live with humans and their inadequacies.

I'd vote for the HST: less chance of making a human mistake.:D
