Those look real good, i got a cheep one for 290.00, got the steel today to weight it down. the unit had 1/4 sides on it and im adding 3/8" plate to both ends to cover up the thin stuff on this one. also does not have a true rear cutting edge like the ones you are looking at. that is the brand of the 550-700 rang here.

wiatt, sounds like you got a good deal. Post some pics of that $290 box blade so we can see it.

290 + tax

plate was 46 bucks and took about 30 minutes to weld to the sides, added 96 lbs to the unit

Defiantly want a box wide enough to cover the tire tracks. Mine is the same width as the loader bucket. If I need to dig a hole the box blade can be backed down the ramp that is created and rip the hard dirt then turn the tractor around to dig with the loader until I'm down to hard dirt again then repeat ripping with the box blade.
1*A couple weeks ago I dug a hole over 4ft deep this way to remove a cement antenna base.
2* wouldn't a BH been easier /quicker.

I don't not have a backhoe. Just used what I had. The box blade and loader dug that hole quicker than you think.

So at $100/hr it's about $400?

if you want to look at it that way, however i usully dont pay myself to weld, lol. If i did not have the ability and tools my decision to buy this cheeper unit might have been different. If the paying myself was figured into everything I did nothing would get done around here. The box blade was pretty much free since the 290 i used was from tips and the family next door to me pays me to mow their property all summer, which adds about 20 minutes to the mowing since i mow whats between us just to make mine look better. I have refused to take their money on so many ocasions but they still continue to mail it to me, give to the wife, or give it to the kids.

I have a B2920 and a 5' Bush Hog brand Box Blade. When I have had trouble pulling it, it was because I lost traction, not power. When I first got it I was planning to use it to dig some dirt out of a pond we have that had mostly dried up. I thought I would be able to back down in there and take a cut and pull it up the side. That didn't work as I ran out of traction, but I was able to loosen the dirt that had silted in up and then haul it out with the front end loader. Using it on the rock drive way we have, it was fine. I think a 54" one would maybe be a better match, but at 48" you would be about 1/2" short of your wheel base. Land Pride I think also offers a 54" one. My dealer could get Land Pride, but tends to stock Bush Hog.

As to brand, if you look at different versions, you will see a significant difference in how they are built. I don't have a welder or experience in it, so I didn't want to get something that wasn't going to stand up. If you are dragging it through loose dirt, probably doesn't matter. But I drag mine through rock, roots, and clay and don't want it to be bending up or pulling the scarfacers through as some have reported having. Also the added weight of the heavier built ones work for you both in getting the job done and as a counter balance for a FEL.
