Good to see your stickin to the diet..... I had a tomato sandwich today along with a piece of leftover chicken, but of course I used Hellmans Real Mayonaise, that kind of shot the calorie count into space, but it sure was good !

Well, before I break my arm while pattin' myself on the back, I should say that for dessert I had a 1" thick slice of the delicious zucchini bread my wife made yesterday.
No olive oil required. . . .

Like you, I could eat green beans three days in a row. Heck! I could probably eat them 7 days a week. I picked several pounds of okra this morning, and for dinner will probably have okra and squash stir-fried with onions and banana peppers. A few more tomato slices on the side will round out my meal. As much as my wife would like to eat that stuff, her stomach won't let her. She would be up half the night if she did. She will probably help me eat some of the fried okra though.

Well, I'll take your question very seriously and say that okra is one of those southern foods that you won't miss until you've had it. It's a key ingredient of gumbo and is prepared and served breaded and fried in restaurants throughout the south. Here is a link to info.

Okra raw is kind of disgusting. it has a fuzzy outside and a slimy inside with big soft seeds. I don't even know what it taste like raw because I can't eat fuzz and slime, but breaded and fried with catsup it is my favorite food.
Jim it looks like you have another good garden, I envy you. Lee county is still without rain and most everyone has let their garden go, it is almost impossible to water enough with 100+ temps & wind every day.

Don, 30 years ago, I had a secretary who brought her own lunch to work; mostly raw vegetables, and she frequently included pods of okra. At that time, I'd never heard of anyone eating raw okra, so naturally, I had to try it to see what it was like. You ought to try it sometime. It's actually not bad, but for my taste, it's not good enough to waste by eating it raw, either. Personally, I like it fried, stewed, and pickled, but my wife only wants it fried.

Don, boiled okra is like oysters, once it's past your lips, it's hard to keep it from slidin' down your throat.
Like Bird mentioned, I can eat raw okra, but I prefer the fresh young tender pods less than 2-1/2" long and chilled slightly. I'd never cut them up in a salad, but I can eat them whole. That said, I prefer to drop a few into a half-full pickle jar and then eat them after they've been there for a couple of days. If you pierce each pod once with a knife, they will fill with vinegar. The acid in the vinegar really cuts down on sliminess. It does the same thing as tomatoes in gumbo. Do you like shrimp gumbo?
Fried okra is unique in that you get a burst of okra flavor, but none of the inherent sliminess. I have been using olive oil to fry in and the Drakes batter Ron and Betty Hall brought to me. I slice a bowl full of okra and then pour in a half-bottle of beer (keeping 1/2 bottle for me). I use either a Ziploc bag or a big aluminum pan to batter the pieces and then fry them in the olive oil until they turn golden brown. They are irresistible. Yum! I had that with my stir-fried squash with onions, peppers, and tomatoes last night for dinner. I sprinkled that concoction with some dried basil from our garden and it was terrific. Don, I'd bet you know somebody else who would love that meal.

Please do post that recipe. I picked 10 lbs the day before yesterday, blanched and in the freezer now. I've still got a bunch more to pick, that recipe could come in awful handy

You're gonna laugh, but about the only thing I miss as far as Navy food is that corn beef hash they served for breakfast. That with some cornbread and a couple of eggs over easy with a hot cup of fresh coffee was perfect in my book. The worst were canned hot dogs and canned hamburgers. YUCK!

When my Pop enlisted in the navy in 42, after basic he was stationed on the USS Wasp. He told me that he could allways tell after the ship picked up a bunch of new recruits..... because the sides of the ship were yellow from scrambled eggs that wouldnt stay down !

Hmmmm, I don't like fried okra. That's because I like the taste of okra.
Here's the way we do it. First we use fresh out of a garden because the pods they pick for the store are too big and already getting a little tough. We like the pod to be two and a half to three and a half inches. They're tender and they're not slimey, fuzzy isn't hairy btw.
We wash the okra and they dry it with a paper towel or piece of cloth. The okra is placed on a plate that's microwavable. We have some special Tupperware microwave dishes that work as good as a plain plate and Miss Glenda prefers them.
The okra is seasoned and then put into the microwave for four to six minutes depending upon the size of serving being cooked.
It comes out cooked without the slimey taste you get when its boiled nor the greasy graininess of fried.
We eat it like you would pickled okra. Grab it by the stem and bite off the pod and enjoy.
This is also the way we cook brim or croppy filets. But then again, we like the taste of croppy and brim and don't particular care for grease and batter, cornmeal or not.

OK, Harv, what do you season the okra with? Salt & pepper & a little butter maybe? And I have no doubt I'd like that. And I'd guess the same seasoning for bream and crappie. Unfortunately, nearly all our fish come from the grocery store now, and while it's good and I enjoy it, I don't think any fish tastes quite as good as bream and crappie.
Incidentally, I just had a tomato sandwich; just toasted a couple of slices of bread, spread on a little Miracle Whip, added four thick slices of tomato, and a dash of salt & pepper. Since Jim Inman delivered a batch of veggies today, we have a good supply now of tomatoes with flavor instead of what the grocery store has.
