Ah...it has a code 31. 3.73 non-limited slip. Is that a big deal if it is a 4wd?

D.

It's no big deal if it's not a limited slip. Mine isn't and I already mentioned that it goes through more snow than many 4X4 vehicles. And, somebody is really taking you for a fool telling you that all Ford limited slip rear axles are shot at 50 to 75k. Don't forget that every V-8 Ford spits out all their spark plugs, all their diesels are junk and all of them will leak out all their oil on your floor overnight as well.

As I mentioned before, there's a lot of misinformation being fed to you. Some people actually believe all the bogus stuff they read on biased chat sites and then turn around and parrot that incorrect and really humorous misinformation as if it were fact. A fact that I'm really burned by is how one of my mutual funds went in the tank because it had too much stock from Government Motors in it and my taxes are going up more to pay to keep them open even as their suppliers are going under every day and are causing dealers to have to wait for parts. Only two of the domestic manufacturers filed for bankruptcy, taking the taxpayers for a ride as well as the businesses who trusted the manufacturers to pay them for the parts they delivered to them. Those are facts that are proven and are the sort of facts that truly impact all of us. Still, even though they are facts, they have little to do with relaying actual hands on experience and ownership of a vehicle you are considering purchasing. Like several people here, I own vehicles from each of the domestic manufacturers. I can point out good points and bad points about each.

Means it will only have 2 wheels pulling. One on the front and one on the rear. I personally would not have a Non Limited slip truck unless it has Detroit style electric lockers. But I tow lots of boats many times at max tow ratings of my trucks out of poor boat ramps and even gravel ones. I could not get by with open diffs with the snow we get here, lake effect stuff that can dump 12" or more at a time with no snow removal for day. But that is my situation. A locker can be added but will cost about $750 per axle. One axle, usually the rear, is all you would really need. Just my $.02!

No, because after 50-75K the Ford limited slip is shot anyway. You have to replace the clutch packs to get it working like is was when it was new.

The Ford limited slip is not a real stout locker. Don't worry about it. If it has 4x4, you'll be fine for mild off roading.

Every Ford LS rear axle I have ever owned has gone way past that. Never had a single axle problem. But wait, you know everything. I have only owned 10 plus Ford trucks since 1997.

Cummins swap is straightforward. Best to buy with an existing diesel engine VIN code for the Cummins swap. Aside from most of the diesel friendly stuff already being in place, it will make the MVA folks happy if your VIN already indicates diesel power.

In the Peoples Republik of Maryland you would have a difficult time getting the formerly gas powered X on the road legally sporting a diesel power plant. Not saying it couldn't be done but by the end of the process you would never, ever want to deal with MD MVA again.

Ideally I would find an X with a missing, tired or blown diesel and swap in a P7100 5.9 with manual tranny, that would a nice combination.

And I've owned 13 Ford trucks in a similar time period and never had an "axle problem", either, but that's not the issue. The issue is the limited slip for the most part don't work. How many trucks a person owns makes no difference. I'd trust a mechanic that works of Ford rears and drives a hyundai more than someone who owns a bunch of Ford trucks. All the Ford l/s rears that we've opened up on them in the past had clutch packs that were worn to the point that they didn't engage properly or would let go after engaging briefly well before 100K miles. Plus the hassle of adding friction modifiers to get them to work at the little that they do work.

If you knew how a Ford "limited slip" rear worked, you'd know that it relies on clutch packs to engage that only work in light off roading conditions. I replaced the limited slip rear in my last (2) Superduty 4x4's with Detroit soft lockers which greatly improved the performance of the rear axles in muddy spots. You'll see most serious Ford off roaders will do the same. My limited slips did little in test after test except lock occassionally on wet snow or grass only to let go again before getting unstuck. They are better than nothing, but not designed for much more than light off-roading.

Exactly my feeling, limited slips are pretty weak compared to lockers. ;);)

None of this really matters because it won't cost much if you get rid of the l/s or open rear from Ford and replace it with a true locker. Less if you do it yourself. :)

Eaton makes a great lineup of Lockers that could be added to his Expedition to improve traction.
