Scooby is right about putting up obstructions. A small local city airport or the faa (not sure which) made the neighbor cut down about 20 giant oak trees that were about 1000 ft from the end of the runway. The trees were even accross a road from the runway. The owner put up a good fight but still lost even though the trees were much older than the airport. The local airport has a paved runway but no lights or tower or even a refueling station, and only about 5 planes ever use it.

I am not a pilot but it seems to me that people who don't fly want to shut anything flying down. Part of the problem is that airplanes have no mufflers and to install one requires certification from FAA.
There are other vehicles without muffler such as Harleys. My house is about 1mile from a road and the Harley guys are gunning the engines really loud while going uphill. It bothers me immensely especially at night.

Lawnmowers also have poor mufflers.
So get your Harley and run it loud by his house or put light on your mower and mow your grass at night to get even.
Or realize that you might be making noise that bothers others and as long as the noise disturbance from others is reasonable live with it.

What I wan to say is that all of us make noise that might annoy others so we should live with noise caused by others. That is the price we pay at this point in time for civilization. Do I wish we lived in quieter environment? For sure. If government legislates noise abetment there would be uproar exactly from the Harley guys about infringement on their freedom. I wish it was legislated though.

+1 especially on the harley thing. Noisy shaking things. Gimme a quiet, reliable BMW or Honda anyday.

I still haven't heard whether he is located at the end of the runway or on the side? Simple question that has gone unanswered. Or maybe I missed it. If he's off to the side seems like he has something to stand on.

His field is large. As stated before, he has never taken off in my direction. He does take off about 90 degrees to the way he lands, (over my house). The field is large enough to have a few different ways do land. He admitted this to me the first time I spoke with him.

Have you considered flying model airplane. I wonder what the altitude limit is for flying model planes. What if you put warning balloons on the 4 corners of your property, and a notice sent daily to all the the neighbors that you will be flying in your air space whenever. He doesn't give you any warning , does he?.

NOTICE TO NEIGHBORS

Dear Sir, I will be flying my planes to day and any day I choose to do so. If the balloons are up, stay clear.

The largest model is a B-52 with a 10 ft wing span, it has 4 jet engines and flies at 150 knots. I will try and stay off your runway, but perhaps I can use it for emergency landings.

If he doesn't have an area designated as a strip and just using a large area he's probably taking off and landing into the wind. Most strips are built in the direction of prevailing winds. However, you can take off and land in a crosswind as long as it's not too severe. If there is no wind and he doesn't use an actual strip and still flies over your house he's purposely annoying you.

I have learned to live with being in the flightpath of the Army National Guard base several miles away, I will trade your small private plane flyovers if you take my C130 and Blackhawk Chopper fly overs :D

I have an ultra light airport less than ½ mile from my house. It's normal to have several circling around on Saturday and Sunday mornings and evenings. Before my next door neighbors moved they used to circle a lot more, mostly because the neighbors wife would be out at the pool sunbathing. What gets me is when I have talked to these guys in the past I get these stories about the thrill of the flight and how free and adventurous they feel. Funny part is they circle their airfield and appear to be afraid of getting out of sight of the airfield. These little aircraft have a very small engine with what appears to be straight exhaust and no noise restriction, I run a racecar that, by local ordnance, must be muffled so at speed it emits less than 95 decibels 100 feet away. It doesn't bother me in fact I enjoy the reduced sound and feel less fatigued after a race. Why can't the aircraft be muffled? I have long sense learned, to each his own but at the same time the less you offend the more you can enjoy doing the things you wish.
