Automotive Alternator on Compact Tractor?

that's unfortunately a sad fact.. in most cases.. a 25$ junkyard alternator and some wire nuts will replace a 90$ generator and 40$ voltage regulator.

great for utility.. bad for us collectors~ :)

Wow I see it as a good thin that I can do that.:D

both good and bad at the same time... so it's a wash karmically I guess! :)

Iron Horse raises a very valid concern that you will probably lose the tachometer function if you go to a truck alternator. Even diesel truck alternators that have a tach function may not be compatible.

Gas or diesel doesn't matter, an alternator is an alternator.

All alternators produce 3-phase A/C current that gets "rectified" into plain old D/C current.

Inside every alternator, there are THREE stator leads, each being one "phase" of the A/C current.

The tachometer wire is ring-terminaled to any ONE of these THREE leads; it makes no matter which one.

This tachometer wire is then routed to the outside of the alternator where it gets plugged into the tachometer feed wire.

It is a very simple matter to install a tachometer wire to ANY alternator, simply by removing the back cover to access the insides.

LEECE-NEVILLE alternators don't even need the cover removed, as all three leads terminate outside the casing with threaded studs.

Many tap into a plain old alternator to add a welding function, making a very decent A/C welder that is ready for work anywhere the alternator/vehicle might be.

Some tap into two of the leads to get regular old 110/220 current; engine speed must be regulated to obtain the optimum 60-cycles.

That's 'IF' it's an electric tach..and not a mechanical one.

If it's a mechanical tach.. then he may possibly use a 10DN delco alternator and the appropriate tach gear, as that alt has a provision for a mechanical tach feed.

it's an older technology alternator that uses an external regulator.. but works good.

I never knew such an animal existed.

Does the mechanical tach have to be specific to the alternator drive ??

Or, can any mechanical tach be driven accurately from such an alternator ??

Thanks.

actual gearing , ratio, pullies, and a tach drive that will fit are all gonna be part of the search. off hand the only reason I have the 10dn wrote down in my notes is that it's possible to use it on ford conversions when you loose the genny.. etc.

What could be any more simple than a one wire alternator. Alternator, bracket, pulley, hook up and go. I converted my Ford 8N, and still use the 6 v start. Does quite well.

I always get a one-wire alternator for a Chevy application and fit it to whatever I'm working on. It has worked every time.;)

ya pays more money too!.. and they simply won't work in some applications.. that's why I like 3-wire..

I should have worded that differently. If I'm working on a project and the OEM alternator is more expensive or hard to find I go for the one-wire deal. It costs $45 if I'm not mistaken. For example I had a wood chipper with an old industrial slant-6 Chrysler engine that I couldn't get parts for. I adapted the Chevy alt. to it and it worked great. Either way you win Soundguy.;)
