I need to bury a gutter drain under a sidewalk

   / I need to bury a gutter drain under a sidewalk #11
I had to run a line of UF wire out towards the street for some lights. Dug a trench and had to get under a 4ft walkway. I went down about 3 ft and hooked up a hose to some 1/2 conduit. Took about 1/2 hr to cut through. I imagine doing this a couple of times then hitting it with a 4x4 or post hole digger you could get through.

Are you sending the pipe to daylight? I took two gutter drains on one side of the house and y-ed them together then out another 50 ft to daylight. After the "Y" I used perf pipe and I've noticed the lawn stays greener over there. Got some iirrigation done too.

If you have access to a pressure washer that would work too. I would use the water pressure method. Works well, kinda slow, but less manual labor for sure.

Not confident you would be happy in the long run with water pressure beit hose or pressure washer under a concrete pour. Water may erode your supporting base under the sidewalk more than you wish. Hard to control. Could result in stress cracks and concrete failure over time due to lack of support.

Here is one for you. I live in Carterville. If you will wax my car, I'll bore a 6" hole under your walk. I have a 6" auger that will go 6'. I also have a mini excavator with a 16" bucket if you are going very far with the line.

Sounds like a deal to me.

I buried the gutter drains along each end of this building before pouring any sidewalks
Right end
Left end

The sidewalk is approx. 5' wide and I need to bury a 4" pipe under it, and I don't really want to cut the concrete out and repour it.
I've got a few ideas but lets here what the TBN braintrusts come up with.

Why didn't you install the drain pipe before installing the sidewalk?

Whats with the Left End/right end deal LB , Pics make no sence , & what does pulling tree roots have to do with the OP,s Question . Obviouslly He Poured the sidewalk before He needed a trench dug  .

trippsgirl , It sounds like a type of cleanout to me . If so it should be turned up . Sorry I,ll have to go back & look at your Original post , Because its got sidetracked .

But the water preasure does work to run under concrete , You just Need to insert the Water Or Preasure hose inside of a larger pipe & push it through Like You would put a well in , Leaving the larger sized pipe in to run the drain pipe through . Bob

EDIT ! I just Realised this thread is from 06 , So I guess We would need pics to see what Your even talking about trippsgirl . Since the thread was renewed & You dont give much info . The Hijacking with pics that have nothing to do with anything didn,t help much.

Idea #1, dig a hole deep enough on each side to stand in and use post hole diggers vertically do dig from each side till I can get the pipe through.

Idead #2: Hammer a steel rod through, weld a ring of some sorts to it on each end, acttach a chain and run it through a length of steel pipe that is sharpened and then hook the chain to the backside of the pipe somehow and then pull it all through with a tractor thus basically taking a core out and then run my pipe.

Lots of good ideas here so far. When I did basement water proofing - we did this a lot. We just tunneled the sidewalk with a "floral" (6" round point) shovel. If clay or hard soil, we would just work it with a demo hammer (chipping gun) with a clay spade or 3" chisel bit.

The way I do it is dig a hole on both sides of the sidewalk with post hole diggers... My walks are 4ft. wide.

Then I take a 'duckbill-shovel' and shovel out some from under the walk on both sides, and then I use a 'pressure-washer' to cut the rest of the way through.

Using a pressure washer can get you real dirty pretty quick. :D... But it works great!
