I am having trouble deciding on a cab 4x20 tractor due to only offering a Ehydro trans. If they would offer the HST Plus in the cab I might consider it, but I REALLY want a 4720 cab with a reverser tranny...

What is HST plus?

We have had our 4520 cab for a year now. Has a 127 hours and we really like it.

When you operate a new 4520 or 4720 cab with upgraded cruise and load match functions for a time you will understand why they are so popular. You simply have much easier control of forward and backwards movement. Cruise control is variable by 1/10th of 1 mph so you can set 1.4 or 1.5 or 7.9 ect. Creep forward or backwards or push the pedal down and take off to full speed in a given range. E Hydro's are a dream to use in close quarters, much better than a reverser will ever be.

Now if you are going to drive forward plowing all day and occasionally use a loader I think a power reverser would be more efficient and would work well. Even the old Syncrorange transmission was fine for larger field work on my old 4020, but most members here using small tractors 4xxx and below use them for a multitude of tasks and having had all of these transmissions I can understand why Deere offers the E Hydro with the smaller cab tractors. It is adaptable to a wide range of tasks and easy to use.

I think a 4720 with E Hydro would be a very good choice for a small versatile tractor.

I just got done baling our back 65 acres. Loading all the hay and hauling it and rowing it up. I use my 5525 for all but the raking of it. I don't think the PR is more efficient in any of it. I just like the larger size of the 5525. The PR makes is much easier to change direction than a "normal" trans, but an e-hydro in the larger tractors would not be a bad thing.

I would second that. The e-hydro is so nice to operate.

True, but it is even more practical in the small tractors working in tight quarters. Too many people are drawing false conclusions about the DR vs. EHydro without having operating both for some time. I have about 600 hrs total time with the E Hydro between the 110tlb and the 4520, hundreds of hours with both DR and Syncrorange and shuttle shift tractors. they were all better than what I previously had.

I think we are saying the same thing - ehydro is the future - period. a 6430 with IVT might be nice...

For tight quarters work (mowing fence lines, moving dirt near other breakable things - I prefer the 4520 with e-hydro.

John Deere AutoHST for the 3520 and 3720 Compact Utility Tractors

Sorry Darin
I was refering to Auto HST. I think HST plus is the kubota name for theor new tranny??

Anyway my personal opinion is that I like the PR for loader work and ground engaging tasks. I had a 3320 ehydro for mowing a year ago and it was great for mowing. I had all the add ons for the cruise, etc but it was not my favorite for loader work.

Interesting - I find my PR has more delay shifting direction. Even with the optional adjustable shuttle control - the slippage bugs me. I find myself still using the clutch to feather the power in and out.

Interesting for sure...I've spent YEARS on a Kubota Glide Shift machine...thought it was the slickest thing yet...was never a fan of Hydro anything... My hand was kinda forced when I got my 3520 Cab...no tranny choice... 115 hours/1.5 years later, I'd be hard pressed to ever want anything else...ESPECIALLY for Loader work...its instantanious direction control....MAYBE if you were driving up & down fields all day long, then MAYBE I'd think PR could be better...but then I'd probably just suggest the Motion Match kit for $80.00 and have all the enchanced cruise features to solve all those "issues"...

Today I was using my tractor with an 8' landplane working on a customers driveway. In so doing I was creeping forward very slowly with an eye on the plane making minute adjustments to the top and tilt, hitch height while watching for approaching traffic at the end of the drive. Much easier to stop and go with the E Hydro it allows me to focus on the implement.

Jenkinsph, I hope you can make it before the crowds reach the water. I certainly agree with you about the pleasures of boating.

On the other hand, I'm extremely pleased with my power reverser, much better than what I could even dream of. Contrary to what has been said, there is practically no delay when changing directions. I tried the e-hydro version at the dealership and wasn't convinced. You press the pedal and nothing happens, then suddenly the tractor bounds forward or backward unexpectedly. Of course I was a novice, but I found there was more delay than with the PR when I wanted to change directions. The dealer demonstrating the system and trying to convince me because the e-hydro is marginally more expensive knocked over an enormous flower pot at the dealership, which didn't help. I guess you learn to live with it.

The nice bit is that everyone seems to prefer what he bought, either PR or e-hydro.
