Smoothing up some pastures.

I am looking to clean up some property for planting next year. I have some stumps in the area. I am not planning on running a tiller over any stumps, but it might happen.

Maybe I am better off using a cultivator or ripper to break the ground first then use a finishing disc harrow.

Ideas?

I am looking at smoothing around 45 acres. The other 20 or so are smooth - just need to plant.

Depending on what sort of tractor you have, a good reasonably priced alternative is to use a chisel plow at shallower depth than one would normally use one. Then disc. Old chisel plows are a dime a dozen around here. You just won't find many that a small tractor can handle. (Most are CAT II or CAT III hitch, and H.E.A.V.Y. too) Also consider an offset disc, or what was once popularly known as a "bog disc".

I have a J D5525. 75 HP PTO CAT II.

I have been thinking a used chisel might be the way to go to get the initial rip. I might not rip the whole thing, maybe just there we tore out stump 3 years ago. Break up enough dirt to spread it around.

You have enough tractor to handle an 8' to 10' chisel at a reasonable depth (in soils typical in MY area anyway)

10 Foot Wide Chisel Plow

That might be a perfect fit.

Hit it with a chisel and then disc and then spike harrow. I wonder if those chisels have springs, etc.
