flail mower, hammer mower?

island, in the last pic you put up of the mower, the mount where the top link goes. Mine is a little different, my slot goes horizontal not up and down like yours. this is how mine was shipped. should i change it?

I like yours better but I think they do the same basic thing. They allow the topping lift to loosely hold the mower so it is free to pivot and ride on the rear roller rather than be rigidly attached to the tractor as with a boxblade. It allows limited movement compared to chains but does allow you to change the attitude of the mower with a hydraulic cylinder and doesn't require getting off the tractor (as chains would).

Here's a good shot of that upper bracket from Caroni's web site.

In the picture above, if used like that, I think you would damage something. There is no play in that setup. The link should be in the horizontal slot. Could even use a chain connected to the top hole to take care of any up force, caused by small hills or objects in the way.

I agree but I would imagine that if you were mowing a football field or something very flat (like in the Caroni photo) it would not make any difference. The "play" is necessary when the tractor is going over bumps and dips but not really necessary on a truly flat surface.

You probably need a level surface to set up the flail. Your roller should be set so your cutting height is correct when hooked up to the tractor, and should be horizontal to the ground. You could probably set it up and forget it, if you use chains for the drop limit. The skids should not touch the ground when mowing.

Just to let you know i reset the roller and it cuts like butter. i used to cut in low one or if lucky low 2, after dropping the rear roller to pull the blades up i can now cut in low 3 and 4 (blades are no longer digging into the ground)
Thanks for the help
