What's Happening with Gasoline Prices

Bird, did you notice any limit on purchases at those prices? I'd expect to see folks with 250 gallon tanks in the back of pickups when they can save 30 to 40 cents per gallon. I'd almost expect a 50 gallon limit, but maybe not.

I filled up today and diesel was $2.89/gal. This is highway diesel, subtract $0.18 for off road diesel.

This is one of the lower prices around here for diesel.

D.

When I buy off road diesel, or red farm diesel, I subtract .30 cents per gallon. On Sep 1st, I paid $2.19 for farm diesel.

I don't have all the details...
But it is my understanding that in SC Gas price drops are tied to the gas in the tank..
IE if I buy 4000 gallons at X price and then I refill 3 days later at X-Y, I can only lower my price in a ration that represents my cost of the gas existing in my tank.

This was designed to protect the little guys.. But I don't know if it does that..

I have seen several times when a busy station got tankers and lowered it's prices but a not so busy station did not...

This might be the case in other states too....

I watched gas prices change as often as 3 times a day at a nearby station on a day when gas wasn't even delivered.

I think he sets prices based on the current NYMEX price.

Jim, I never thought about it. I didn't notice anything about any limits, but they may have such. This new Quick Trip also has diesel, while the one 4 exits north on I-35E at Mayhill Road does not have diesel. Ths new one opened Sept. 6, but the one at Mayhill Road is only a couple of years old. I don't know how they decide whether to sell diesel or not.

I was talking to the attendant at Sams Club who told me that the price is set at there corporate office. They set it from there and it can go up or down several times during the day. He told me that it can even happen while you are pumping the gas. He said that he's had allot of complaints from people who were pumping gas at one price, but then it went up while they were pumping it. He also told me that nobody complained with it went down while pumping it. I've never seen this, nor do I know of anybody who has seen this, so I don't know if he was telling me the truth or not. I find it hard to believe that they could change the price while a person is pumping it. My thought is that you agrree to that price when you start pumping it and they should not change that after you are pumping the gas, but I don't know that for a fact, and I don't know that he was being dishonest with me either.

Eddie, I've never seen or heard of that happening before. I would guess it's possible, but unlikely.

I am with you Eddie about it not being right to change price mid fill up. I think the legal issue would be what constitutes the transaction event. I wonder which it is, the commencement of the dispensing of the fuel - or - the time of payment?

I know for example that (in Canada) there is no law that says a seller has to give the buyer the price marked at the shelf for a retail item (some exceptions like advertised prices). This is how we foil people who switch price tickets.

I'd be very annoyed if they changed gas pricing half way through a fill up.

Isnt there some rule where the price and volume on the pump is the price/volume you pay no matter what the clerk has inside the booth?

I dont think the pumps are sophisticated enough to change on the fly?

Jim, I've been doing more than the usual going the last few days, so I stopped to fill up again this morning at the new Quick Trip, then went inside to see what the store looks like, and I asked if they had a limit and the guy said no limit. I told him I was just wondering what would happen if someone showed up with a 250 gallon tank in the bed of his pickup and he just shrugged.:D
