Thought about using a magnetic oil pan heater for my BX 2360 instead of installing a block heater. Anyone ever used one? Is it safe to do or should I just put in a block heater.

warcloud, where have you seen them? If you didn't have a built in block heater and they are even half good may be nice to have if it gets REALLY cold.

I have used a couple different ones. Don't waste your money. For as easy as you can get and install a real block heater, I woudn't bother.

They barely accomplish anything.

Don't waste your $..the block heaters are more efficient and easy to install..

A magnetic heater is better than nothing but, only a little. The block heaters work really well, plug it in for an hour and it is warm, two hours and you would think it had just been running.

The in-the-block heater and the magnetic heater both put out the same amount of heat and both use the same amount of electricity. The installed type screws into the water jacket part of the engine block and heats the water - which heats the block. The magnetic kind is the same heater with a magnet built on the side so it can be stuck to a convenient place on the motor block. Obviously the magnetic type isn't going to conduct as well to the motor block plus it is going to lose some heat to the surrounding air. Lots better than nothing, but not nearly as good as a heater threaded right into the engine.

At what temperature do you begin to consider installing a block heater? Most of our winters are spent in the 30's (F) with an occasional dip down to 0 at night.

There is probably some reduction in engine wear by pre-heating even in the summer. Same goes for transmission heaters. At any temperature below 40F my diesel tractors sure start easier when heated. Below about 20, heating is necessary for them to start at all.

The only one without a heater is the old 1958 JD530 gasoline tractor. It will start from cold at 20 below with nothing but a little choke.

Frost plug type block heater is a mere $20-$25 and the magnetics are actually costlier and do much less.

Go 'block' or inline hose type.
Both are merely a 15-20 min installation and will really make life easy for your engine.
A mere 20-45 min prehest and she'll start just like in summer.

30's possible block heater might get away with mag heater.

0 block heater should be on high to do lsit.

I've got them both and where I live it is a good thng. If you can only have one get the block heater. it'll do a better job in less time.
