Towing 10,000lbs with 1/2 ton, or upgrade?

Yes, the 5.4 is available in the SuperDuty but the tranny is not the same as for the rest of the running gear. And yes, they are very stout. I have been saying what you did for the last few years. The 1/2 tons are more truck than the 3/4 tons were 10 or so years ago.

towing 10,000lbs with a 1/2 ton

Nope, not safe and should not be done especially with todays type vehicles. No matter what answer you get{and yes it can be done} the police and courts will tear you apart if you're in an accident. A 1/2 ton PU is not built to handle that type of load, do what you feel you should but just remember if something happens you may have hindsite.

I agree there are better rigs to do this with but your statement does not hold water. Toyota, Nissan, Ford, and GM all have 1/2 tons that have tow ratings at around or slightly over 10,000#. Dodge is the only one who has stepped into this range of towing.

This is just plain wrong, almost every new 1/2 truck made is rated for over 10k which means it can safely pull a good 10-15% more since they under-rate these figures for safety and insurance. My 2003 1/2 ton is rated for 8,990lbs and it easily handled a tad over 9500lbs.

I assume you meant Dodge is the only one who hasn't stepped into this range but the 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 has a 10,450lb tow capacity. ;)

Agree with a previous poster, this ain't no lawnmower you're hauling.
Keep everything legal concerning weights. Check with your insurance provider to see what is / is not covered. Keep good brakes & good tires with proper inflation.
If you get in a situation and someone winds up their earthly work, Well, its not something you want to live with.
And the problem with that is "You Never Know". Depending on the state and the investigation findings, you may face manslaghter charges.
If you're that close to the edge (over a little?), make sure you are careful and check everything.
Rgds,

I stand 100% corrected. I know for a fact the 09 and earlier models were under 9,000#. I forgot they have a new chassis and rear suspension so this in essence is a whole new truck. Sorry for the confusion. Glad they stepped it up.

I have yet to own a truck with the GCWR listed on the door jamb.

You are right, its the GVWR, not the GCVWR. You would have to get the GVWR from the door jamb and then to the owners manual to figure out the GCVWR. I was not clear enough.

Thanks

Diamondpilot, let me ask this: If a memeber of your family was involved in an accident {serious injury or death}with a setup like this what would you do?

I did own a dodge 1500 with a heavy duty tow package and trailer break. I used it to pull my compact tractor around {around 3600lbs +weight of trailer} it worked fairly well for that. Then I got a compact dozer weighs around 7000lbs + trailer in NO way was this a good setup:eek:. I would bet, if I had been in an accident there would have been lawyers knocking down the door. I drove tractor trailer for many years, so I do have a small understanding of loaded vehicles. Just because the power is there to move something does not mean the weight/size is there to stop it.
