custom hose cost

quite understandable, the large manufacture is cause for high cost, and if shipped from overseas then even more high cost, by the time the product reaches the merchants/reatailers and he ads his 5% for 10 minutes work,
us consumers really feel the crunch, Yes a lot of us overlook the overhead cost in owning and running a business, but I think some places over price their products do to the lack of sales, actually more now then ever I am seeing things go up and up simply because the retailers are trying to make up for the loss of sales, and again it starts in the manufactures whenh there sales go down the demand of products or down so they have to increase cost,
They can call it what they want, their excuses are things like shipping, delivery, fuel cost, insurance rate, etc, but in order to stay in business and have a good customer/business relationship you have to absorb some of these cost, and when you can do this you will have return customers, not folks walking out the door feeling as though they have been ripped back,
I know! I've run my business for over 30 years and have learned to absorb;)

And what happens when there is no place left to absorb the costs?
When my sales went down with the economy, I lowered my prices in order to increase volume.
I came to the realization that some people can't be pleased even if they were given the product for nothing.
I had loads of repeat customers. Almost every sale was a repeat customer. In my 2 years of open doors, I knowingly had 1 customer that left unhappy and I'm told from other businessmen in the area that he is never happy. In a good economy, I made a decent profit. I would not have ever gotten rich, but I would have lived comfortably. The economy tanked, and that was the end. There are some bad shops out there, but, for the most part, the profit we make is what we need to run our business. Funny thing is I have a buddy about 40 miles away with a huge hose shop. He absolutely rips people off beyond belief. He's still in business and living well. I'm thousands in debt. Maybe I should have followed his business model.

I want to thank Wayne County Hose for the reply. It just seemed high but the fact is I was able to drive to the shop, hand him the hose and walk out 5 minutes later with a new hose, all with quality parts. With the backhoe down and in the middle of a job it really ended up being a good deal.

Regarding Wayne County's post...
In my earlier note about the cost of custom hoses,
I was trying to say that I got exactly what I needed right now.
The assurance and convenience are worth the cost.
If we were a little bit closer, I would gladly do business with him. Such service is invaluable.

wayne is absolutely right, hose and fitting are not cheap. i work for a company that hauls garbage and demo debris as well as operates a transfer station, so everything from garbage truck packers, rolloff trucks, walking floor trailers, loader backhoes, payloaders, and a few other machines all have hydraulic hoses all over them. we have our own hose machine and try and stock the hose and fittings we use most, but still cant have everything. just the stock we have is over 30 grand and thats not including the hose crimping machine. its not a cheap bussiness to be in, and while i am lucky to be able to get my hoses at the cost we pay for the materials, i have to admit its not a whole lot cheaper than the hyd shops. maybe 2/3 the cost of having hoses made. we buy our hose and fittings at a good price since we spend a good bit on them every year but still you would be amazed at the cost or many fittings, especialy o ring face like JD loves to use, and hose is about 3 bucks a foot for #8 and surprisingly higher for smaller and larger sizes, i think its that #8 hose is the most common size. but regardless its all expensive stuff. i have used the farm store hoses alot over the years, and can tell you for sure they are not as good at durability from weather especialy, as well as scuffing damage. we use aeroquip at work, its pretty good all around, we used to have gates and it didnt seem as durable as the aeroquip is, but maybe that has improved in the last 5 years i dont know. i will say tho that i for years thought the hyd shops were screwing me, but after seeing the actual cost of the stuff i realize it wasnt as far outa line as i had thought, and now i get to enjoy the convenience of 24/7 hyd hose access! something that realy makes me think twice before jumping jobs again!

I get my hoses on line now unless a common size then I buy them at Rural King. I just had 2 18' hoses made and shipped over night for $89. My 2 local hose guys, Napa and BobCat, wanted $220 and $198 plus tax.

Some of those testimonials are just that. individual preference. You all know that when you need a hose right now, you will go to the nearest hose supply place and have a hose made up. Do you guys really think you are getting a better product, because they made your hose in a few minutes. Whats this thing about brand name, one guy will cut down another company because they use a hose that they don't. What is the best, who the heck knows. It's probably all about the person that made the hose assembly. Was he in a hurry, Did he feel good that day, did he just get slammed by the shop supervisor.

Time is probably the most important factor in some of those decisions, like I need it yesterday. Time is money in a business, and you do what you have to do. If you have a company credit card, who cares what it cost. You all know this to be a fact also. You know you pay for personal service. We are here to serve, yea, sure. A buck is a buck. I use the local shop when time is not that important. However I ask questions, and will walk out if not satisfied. There are about 7 or 8 hyd supply places in town here, plus the TSC, Napa, HF. This crap about not install fittings on another manufactures hose is just that. If they took the time to measure the hose, find the right fitting and press it all together, but no, they really want to sell you some of their stock, which may have been sitting around for many years. You don't always get the full story. You also don't really know what products were used in the assembly anyway. This must be a good hose, all parts are from the same manufacturer, and I am so happy to pay this outlandish price. Some of those hoses and fittings on the tractors or any hydraulics equipment is probably generic anyway, or a mix match of parts.

So it's really a no-brainer to shop around and try and get the best price if you have the time. However time is money in a lot of cases, and you do what you gotta do. Napa might be the only hyd supply in 50 mi. Just pay the man. Well, if I have to.

This has got to be about the most ignorant statement you have ever made.

This has got to be about the most ignorant statement you have ever made.

Understand this, I am not specifically talking to you, but if you answer so be it.

You could have said that is simply not true, but you chose other words for your statement, as though you are speaking for all the hose guys. That was very noble of you, and I think they will thank you kindly. Just explain to the people walking out the door, why 2, 3 ft hoses with fittings would cost around $80.00. Thanks , come again. Yea, sure. Not if I can find another place.

Just which part do you disagree with. Does the manufacture exchange new hose for old with you ever couple of years? Do you only carry one brand, and do you ever mix different manufacturers parts on the same assembly? I have friends that do what you said you do. Just don't try and sugar coat everything, as if we don't have enough sense to figure it all out. Hydraulic supply and repair is definitely not a poor market, because these hydraulic shops around here have been in business a good number of years. So don't tell me the hydraulic shops are not doing a good business.
