Solar-powered clothes dryers disallowed by HOA's

The HOA ban on clotheslines and the CC thing have one thing in common--one group of people telling other people what they can and can't do.

Only superficially. If you are not allowed to use a clothesline, you knew that when you purchased the property. It is within your power to not put yourself in that situation.

If the coal fired power plant two states away is polluting your air, that is not within your ability to do much about, except through a democratic process, which is how we arrived at considering the use of CC's.

To me at least, there is a huge distinction between 'somebody telling us what we can or cannot do' versus a majority approved public policy being pursued to benefit all. Whether you or I think CC's are the way to achieve the desired result is beside the point. That's how democracy works. If you agree with the majority position, you are happy, otherwise you are not. We are never going to make everybody happy on any given issue.

I mentioned this thread to my neighbor concerning HOA's. His daughter just bought a house in a HOA subdivision, he was telling me that they (HOA) could put a lien on a home if the dues where not paid! Craziest thing I've ever heard, a lien on a $200G home over $200 bucks?

Also my neighbors wife's sister is an HOA vice pres somewhere and the neighbor said she is like the "desperate housewife " show, running around with binoculars and taking notes, geeez.

Its like an HOA is a government on a small scale, but, I guess you DO sign up for it..

Yep, an HOA can force foreclosure for non-payment of fees. I wouldn't sign up for an HOA, personally.

It's about control and some folks deciding for others what they can and can't do. Tyranny by majority is still tyranny.

HOA docs are typically written to allow the HOA to file a lien for nonpayment of dues and assessments. Some of the people running them take a hard line and will file the lien. Others don't.

As a concept, that is okay, but what is your actual example in regards to CC's?

How much carbon would you like? You can make your own electricity, no one is stopping you. Then you wouldn't pay for any carbon credit surcharges.

Is it really about control? What if your neighbor uses an outdoor wood boiler all winter that leaves your house and yard covered in heavy smoke everytime it cycles? Or, what if a neighbor dumps whatever on the ground and it contaminates your well? A neighbor's dog is running loose and bites your child, kills your chicken - whatever. There are many examples of situations where people are told what they may and may not do for very good reasons.

By your reasoning, you would refuse to do anything you don't want to, lest someone 'controlled' you.

The concept behind carbon credits is that you as a consumer will put pressure on your electricity supplier to provide power at the lowest possible cost. Without incentives, or penalties in this case, power generators will use whatever is most profitable for them in the short term.

It's all smoke and mirrors and BS. Politicians and lawyers make out, while the average joe trying to keep his house warm and food on his table is footing the bill. You can only bleed a turnip so far.
In this day and age you would think everyone would be advocating the use of clothes lines.
And don't worry about the neighbors dog killing the chickens, most places won't let you have chickens either.
I have to stop, because what I want to say will get deleted by Bird. But keeping with the tractor theme, I doubt if the govt will allow you to use one with Diesel or gas in the next 20 yrs.

I'm concerned that while we bicker about whether and what to do about climate change, we're ceding another industry to Europe and Asia. All the bickering I'm afraid is truly hurting us....I wish we had some answers.

I think you are missing the general theme of my posts, WE are the government, unless you sit back and don't participate. Notice I didn't say I think CC's are a great idea. I even said I am certain I don't understand them.

Maine is one of two or three states where voters can put any issue on the ballot. You need to gather petition signatures, currently the number is about 53,000 valid signatures. In every polling place, every election, someone is collecting petition signatures for one cause or another. It isn't really that hard to get signatures for an issue people feel strongly about. Maybe you need voter referendums where you live.

I just don't understand how folks rail against laws and regulations that are directly or indirectly the result of a majority vote - in a democracy. There is a political process, that many have learned how to use very effectively, available to all. If you constantly disagree with any regulation that may force you to change, that's the same as saying at least 51% of your fellow citizens are full-time idiots. :) Who knows, it could be true.

The first place I would start - to get real change - is with term limits in the House and Senate. Maybe more average Joe's would have a chance for representation.

I'd rather see -> Spending limits on campaigns, with full public transparency.
