Anyone have experience with an underground electric fence to contain a Dog ?

I have had very good results with the invisible fence on 3 different Labs.
The only problem we had is that there was a school about 1/2 mile from our old house and sometimes when kids walked by the Labs would take the shock in order to follow the kids to school and play ball.
I haven't tried the lower-priced brands but I hear they are not as good as invisible fence.
I have a different opinion on the price. While $1 to $1.5 k sounds expensive, compare that to the cost of a physical fence that will contain the dog, and you will quickly see that IF is a bargain.
Plus with a physical fence, the dog will constantly test it until he finds a weak spot. with IF that issue doesn't come up.

my wife had a couple large dogs with wandering hearts when we met, after the second call to get up and help her go find the babies the system went in.
She followed the directions, and bought Inotek systems, it made them marley dogs model citizens. The dogs aged and the electric fence where it wasn't buried needed maintenance, so I replaced it with the wireless kind.
All and all we had good luck with inotek, and they replaced a collar under warranty witch surprised me. Now I use a wireless system, when i go out the dog is free to run, when the dog goes out alone to do its job it has a collar on.
the wireless works well here and can go camping with us, or anywhere
Just a note, if I ever replace the system i will get rechargeable collars, buying special batteries is a pain and exspensive. In fact batteries would be one of the top items for me to consider, the first collars we had used lithium that were 10 bucks for 2, and we used 2 every 3 weeks!

just a humorous note
we were installing new flooring in the bed room, and my wife was cutting the wooden panels just out the door on the deck ( it was 20 below). I handed her a board and she went to chop it down, I heard the saw start and a dog YARK in pain the next moment. Thoughts of blood and maimed animals and the words "now what?" came out the next moment.
Turns out the saw had electrical interfearance and set off the dog collar.
Dog kept away from the saw the rest of his days

I got one from TSC this spring, My sister bought one 2 years ago " the invisable fence" i spend $150 she spent over $1000 the traing is the same and you have too do it or dont bother with either. i had to install mine it took most of the day but for what i saved it was worth it. My german shepherd got out once .............TODAY!!! so im a little worried but she was excited when someone pulled in the driveway and took a little while to come out of the car . i turned up the power so we will se how that works.
I also her about the wireless one that was out now, you just plug in a transmitter and set the range, put the collor on and your ready to train. only one person i know has used this product and loves it.

We have one that we installed 6-7 years ago. We won it from a contest at our vet. It worked in conjunction with a 4 foot chainlink fence for years. My ol dog is getting so she does not have the spunk to scale the fence anymore so the system has been unplugged for awhile. But they do work.
BATTERIES.
I do not remember the manufacturer of ours, but the batteries were very expensive. I took one of the old batteries apart, and all it is were little button cells stacked on top of each other and shrink tubed. I started buying the button cells at radio shack, and just used electrical tape to hold them together. Worked great, and cost a fraction of the oem cost.

As others have mentioned its all about following the training that is provided. We have appx. 1000' of our back wired in and I have a 80+ lb. golden retreiver. He obides by the fence w/ no problem. One time I went to my neighbors for a beer, he seen me from the deck got excited and chased me past the fence he got shocked pretty good and was afraid to go back over to our property in fear of getting shocked again. Ever since no issues. As someone else has also mentioned make sure to set the warning zone for about 10 feet or so so he/she can get warned well in advance.

Over the years I have seen quite a few homes with the fences and they have kept in the dogs. A couple of our current neighbors have them and the dogs respect the fence.
However a very smart dog can defeat the fence.
Before the wifey was the wifey she had her own place with the invisible fence. Chase, who I called Lady since she was one, was a very smart dog. And a Lady.
Miss her still.
Chase kept getting past the fence and the wifey could not figure it out. Eventually she saw how Chase would defeat the fence. Chase would run around the yard along side of the fence but far enough away so that the collar would beep. She would do this until the collar stopped beeping. At that point the battery was dead and Chase knew she was ok to go past the fence.
For most dogs the fence is going to work. Unless you have a dog that will eat the pain. Or a dog that is a genius.

Dan has a good point I forgot to mention the battery life is only good for 30-60 days (to keep it working strong) so check them every 30-45 days and replace when sound of beeping sounds slightly fainted.
