Oil & Fuel 50hr front axle oil??

   / 50hr front axle oil?? #41
SUDT is about half the viscosity of UDT, which is about the equivalant of 20 weight oil. As far as I can determine, neither of these oils have any EP (Extreme Pressure) additives. These aren't going to present any real protection against gear gaulling and wear.
I use 80W-90 gear oil, and wouldn't use anything else. On my uneven property, I'm in 4 wheel drive most of the time.
They do have the EP additives. They have to to be recommended for tractor transmissions and differentials.

SPYDERLK,
I would sure like to see where this is stated. I have searched high and low, and have yet to see any reference to EP additives in the SUDT or UDT fluids

I can't say conclusively that there are EP additives in UDT but I believe there must be some to protect the gear portions of the transmission.
I do plan to change the front axle to a full synthetic gear lube when it is time for service, mostly because I believe the trans/hydraulic fluid to be somewhat of a compromise. The front axle is all gears, no hydraulic component, hypoid gear lube is designed specifically for that type of application, the manual indicates gear lube as an acceptable alternative so why not use an oil designed for the purpose. I haven't used the front drive too much, not needed for most of what I use the tractor for but, if I saw that I would be using the FEL to dig a lot or bought a box blade or similar attachement that required a lot fo pulling force, I would change the front axle to gear lube before doing that work, just for the extra protection.

I have a GL4630gstc and will be doing the 50 hr service over the holidays. The operators manual says kubota UDT or sae 80w90. This seems to me to be two very different oils. UDT being a more hydraulic type oil with less viscoisty and 80w90 gear oil being a heavier oil and has the extreme pressure additives for bevel gears. What are others using.

I just changed mine in my L4200 (2500 hour 'break-in' service) - I used Tech brand 80W90 gear oil from WalMart. Perfect stuff for the job, EP rated (EP is what used to be called 'hypoid'), and relatively inexpensive too.

Do a google on [udt, universal trans hydraulic kubota "Extreme pressure"]. EP is just part of the universal rating.
