Pellets vs Wood

   / Pellets vs Wood #21
I have access to all the free firewood I want..Just don't want to be bothered. Grew up spending all summer cutting and hauling firewood.

Even my dad gave up on it after many years given the truck damage and misc expenses. We came home with the step bumber in the bed at least once a month:eek:

Besides, my homeowners insurance would have gone up quite a bit when I built this place if I would have installed a woodburner.

I wouldn't burn firewood even if was free for me either. I had to do this when I was a kid and have had enough of it.

I like pellets for these reasons, and prbably a few more that I can't think of right now:

Cleaner than wood
Less labor involved
Simple ON/OFF and thermostat control
Wife can even do it by herself if I am away
Could not have stated it better. My wife and I are in our 50,s and the pellet/corn stoves are much easier verses the wood.coobie

What a bunch of softies :D:D

Okay, it's work, but I need the exercise. I don't run, go to a gym, etc. Plus, I'm not using more than 1 1/2 cords per year.
Dave.

There was a time when I was very good with a scythe (yeah,I'm that old). I use a weed eater now even though I need the exercise.

Yep, firewood will heat you several times. The last is when you burn it. :D

Looks like Ron Mar and whistlepig have sim stoves to what I have. After Pyro Ind sold out to Lenex, they moved production to Mexico. Qlty went South as well. My local dealer ended up dropping the Whitfield line after qlty became an issue.

Sounds like Ron's stove is somewhat different than mine. Maybe be due to differences in free standing Vs insert. The combustion air inlet pipe runs from the back side directly into the burn box, just aft of the pellet burn hopper. Ron is sure right about needing to separate the combustion air from inside of the house.

I have an older 1999 Whitfield that came with the house we bought. This was before Lennox bought out Whitfield. I have also read that Whitfield quality has suffered since being bought by Lennox. If I were to replace it I wouldn't buy a cheap pellet stove. There is a lot to these pellet stoves.

When I stop burning firewood, it will be a switch to propane.
Just too many questions on the supply quality and quantity of pellets.

So far, at 70, I can get the wood needed to last a year without too much hassle (and do it primarily alone but with a wood splitter). Have two years ahead now, and a year's worth in logs decked and ready for bucking to length, splitting, and loading the pallets. Unless gone for a weekend, the propane boiler is not turned on and the wood boiler handles it all.

Pellet stoves may have some advantages.....until all the stores run out of pellets and put you on a waiting list like what happened in my town last winter. I can always go cut down a tree.
Of course some people might not have access to plentifull firewood either.

I don't use a pellet stove as primary heat. Just back up heat. Are some of you guys 100% wood or pellets?
