How much HP? Any suggestions for make and mode?

There are high 20's to low 30's hp tractors that are heavy enough and have enough 3ph lift to move big bales. I've read posts by those that do it with Kiotis on a regular basis. Though if rough or steep terrain, it might be a bit iffy, even at that. The crux of the decision really is about the hay bales. If you need to lift big bales off a truck, stack or unstack, then you really have to go to a 40 hp tractor or bigger. This has absolutely nothing to do with how much land is involved. The number of head of cattle might drive what type of bales are used. For very small herds, square bales may be fine. When it's all said and done though, if the machine can't do the tasks at hand, then what good is it?

Besides cost, there is no reason to buy something that lets you just barely get by. None of those discussed are particularly great for finish mowing a lawn. One might get by with a smaller CUT for mowing and to move little bales of hay. But, one can do better, faster, safer with machines sized and equipped for the tasks at hand. A riding mower, GT, zero turn, or subcut will cut grass best. They won't handle the heavy stuff. A 50 hp tractor will handle the heavy stuff with ease, but may compact a lawn and be difficult to maneuver for finish mowing, and require more trimming in places it can't reach. The in-between 30 hp CUT will compromise on both ends, which is OK in many cases. But, if you can't get your cows fed, get hurt or break your tractor trying, or you have to spend a lot more time and money on small bales, did you really buy the right machine(s)?

No matter which tractor he buys, he'd still be better off cutting the acre of lawn with a Lawn tractor, GT, or zero turn. I wouldn't think about using my 25 hp CUT to mow my lawn. It's way to big, heavy, and cumbersome to manuever. Every time I take it on my lawn it either leaves ruts (R4's) or compacts it hard as a rock.

The tire type brings another point to consider. R1's will work best for tilling and working where it is wet and muddy, like around the cows and their manure. But, R1's are very hard on a lawn. If your tractor is dedicated to tractor chores you can use the R1s that are better suited for those tasks. If not, then you almost have to use R4s, which are terrible in the mud. If you have mud, you will get stuck with R4s. I regret not getting R1s, myself.

Aroung here (northest Texas) we have 4x4, 5x4, and 5x6 round bales weighing from about 800 to 1200 or more. Need a pretty good sized tractor to move some of them....Besides if it has less than 40 HP it's just a lawnmower! :)

No way I'd want to regularly move even small rounds with a 20's hp tractor.. for one.. it's likely narow and light. and 2 it will be taxing the crud out of it.

i move round bales currently on a mid 40's hp tractor and that is marginal IMHO.

3 PT hitch bale forks work wonders on lighter tractors. would not want to have to move numerous bales with a small tractor with an FEL, mind you we did it with out MF 35 for years, Big squares too.

huge difference in the capability of a mf 35 and a new scut.

3pt forks are ok.. but no lift capability.. can't unload or stack..

So true.

New 1635 front axle is rated @ 3,800 pounds, wonder if that would be enough to safely lift bales ?

I'd put old against new any day. There is a reason these old tractors are 60ys old and still running and working. I've got an 850 ford that is really only a few inches bigger in size than an 8n.. I move round bales on it's 1-arm fel ( yes.. 1-arm, attached to one side of the tractor essentially ).. and quite a GOOD bit out front of the machine. I'd be squemish to do that on a similar sized cut built today.. nor do I think that cut in question would still be around in 55ys working just fine.

I loved my 1997 32hp NH 1920.. though I simply don't expect it to outlive my 55 ford 660 with essentially equal hp.

They have stood the test of time but what about the operating hours. Have stood that test as well??:D Cause if they haven't one can not really comment on their durability other than say they age well sitting!:D

You seem like the perfect guy for larger used tractor. You have some jobs that would benifit from the larger capacity, but small scale doesn't justify cost of new. The 0% financing on new has made GOOD used machines very affordable. If you get too small initially with a new machine and have to upgrade, you'll take a beating.

Check out a New hOlland T1530, you can get in a 12x12 synchronized shuttle shift, or 3 range hydro. THe tractor is 4x4, 4 cylinder engine. it has plenty of power for mowing and tilling, and such and the loader has a good enough capacity for moving hay and so does the 3 point on the tractor. Our cehck out the TT-A series in the New Holland, four to choose from 40hp, 48hp, 56hpm and 75hp. Bigger in size but still small in price.
