Hey Dave been awhile.
Don't under estimate yourself your doing a great job at getting it back together IMOP.I am guessing used and new to you. I would do pretty much the same,or at least send the head in to get worked and checked out.I had to look back when I seen 8ball and sounded all to familiar. Then I ran across talking with you about some tiller pics. earlier this year. Sorry about that wasn't talking period for a good while. Just wondering,Did you ever get that going also?

Hey, those pics helped a bunch. I did get that tiller working, was able to use it a while till the tractor took the dump on me.

I just used 1/2 of the original 21 spline shaft, that had a square shaft, and fitted it to a 6 spline square shaft, all that time beating my brain and it was a simple fix.

Used it for some plots, did my pumpkin patch, and leveled out the ground were my parents old farm house used to be, that i burned and buried. Cant wait to put it to use this coming spring. Good hearing from ya, and happy holidays!!!

got a new head ordered and delivered from hoye. My repair man calls me and says there is a sand pit hole in one of the valve seats. Well he might as well be speaking japanese, cuz I have know idea what that means. Took some pics and fowarded them to Hoye, See what they say? Some pics.

If that hole goes through to the water jacket, that would explain all your troubles.... but I don't know that it does. On many (most? all?) automobile engines, the valve seats are a separate piece, using specially treated, hardened steel; they --or the block-- are heated & pressed into place, as I understand it. That is the surface that the valves actually seal against.

Perhaps others with more knowledge can help out here; what I do know is that any problem with valve seats is not a good thing and will lead to other problems down the road.

No biggie good catch though, things like that needs to be addressed while it's apart.Cheap and easy fix, guys like that is who you want to be working on you equipment/Vehicles IMOP.I don't believe it was a new head and could not detect it until he pulled the valves or should have if not, if I am even looking at it wright. Probabley seated fine for a "Get By Charlie" but could be a issue in the future. I'm no expert just have some machine shop experience in my younger days.

That hole is on the new head I had ordered. So its not the cause of my initial problems.

The repair man said it could possible work, but also cause problems in the future, he says if your paying for a "new" head, might as well be in new condition.

Think I found an honest one here, gonna have keep his number handy.

I could be wrong, but from that picture it does not appear that the casting imperfection is actually in the seat area that the valve contacts.

I see it also Norm not sure if I was looking at it correct. The head is what usually seats the valve and that is or might just be part of the guide. Hard to tell from the Pics. doesn't really matter as soon as Hoye see's it and needs to be corrected I'm sure it will ;)

I doubt there is anything to be corrected. There things are cast with extra material for flaws, then all critical areas are machined to perfection and inspected. They just need to stick a valve in there and see if it hits the hole.

although the pics leave a lot to be desired the flaw in the pictures is clearly in the valve seat. there is no extra material there for "flaws". if assembled as it is, it will not be long till it will burn the seat. "put a valve in and see if it hits" is not good advice. do it right and only do it once.
